Job Summary

The Driver is responsible for ensuring the safe, secure, and timely transportation of authorized passengers, medical supplies, equipment, and organizational goods while maintaining assigned vehicles in excellent operating condition.
The successful candidate will operate vehicles according to Medical Teams International fleet management policies and Uganda traffic regulations, perform vehicle inspections, maintain accurate transport records, support emergency response activities, and promote passenger safety during all journeys.

Key Responsibilities

Safe Transportation
  • Safely transport staff, patients, volunteers, guests, and authorized passengers.
  • Transport medical supplies, equipment, and organizational materials to designated locations.
  • Operate assigned vehicles in accordance with Medical Teams International fleet policies.
  • Observe all Uganda road traffic regulations and defensive driving practices.
  • Ensure passengers arrive safely and on schedule.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after every trip.
  • Identify vehicle maintenance issues and immediately report them to the supervisor.
  • Transport vehicles to approved garages for scheduled servicing and repairs.
  • Monitor oil levels, coolant, brake fluid, tyres, battery, and other essential vehicle components.
  • Ensure vehicles remain mechanically sound and roadworthy at all times.
  • Keep vehicles clean, well-maintained, and free from debris.
Fleet Documentation
  • Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks for every journey.
  • Submit weekly vehicle inspection reports according to organizational schedules.
  • Record fuel consumption and mileage accurately.
  • Ensure all vehicle documentation is current and available inside the vehicle.
  • Maintain proper transport documentation for delivered goods.
Passenger Safety
  • Ensure all passengers wear appropriate seat belts throughout the journey.
  • Verify passengers possess all required travel documentation before departure.
  • Follow organizational safety procedures during transportation.
  • Drive responsibly under all weather and road conditions.
Emergency Response
  • Support healthcare personnel in administering First Aid during emergencies when required.
  • Assist in patient evacuation according to Medical Teams International emergency procedures.
  • Remain calm and professional during emergency situations.
  • Complete accident and incident reports whenever necessary.
Loading and Delivery Operations
  • Supervise proper loading and unloading of supplies and equipment.
  • Verify delivered goods against delivery documents.
  • Obtain required delivery confirmations.
  • Return completed transport documentation to the Operations Department.
Risk Management and Compliance
  • Identify operational, security, environmental, and fleet-related risks.
  • Report safety concerns promptly to supervisors.
  • Participate in defensive driving and road safety training.
  • Comply with Medical Teams International fleet management policies and Code of Conduct.
  • Support safeguarding and protection policies at all times.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

The Driver will contribute to Medical Teams International's safeguarding commitment by:
  • Promoting a safe and respectful working environment.
  • Protecting children and vulnerable adults.
  • Preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment, and discrimination.
  • Reporting safeguarding concerns according to organizational procedures.
  • Maintaining professional conduct during all assignments.

Required Qualifications

Education
Applicants must possess:
  • Uganda Certificate of Education (O-Level Certificate).
Licenses and Certifications
Applicants must have:
  • Valid Ugandan Driving Licence with Classes A1, B, C1, and D1.
  • Defensive Driving Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
The following will be an added advantage:
  • Certification in Vehicle Mechanics and Maintenance.

Required Experience

Applicants should have:
  • Minimum 3 years of heavy vehicle driving experience in Uganda.
  • Clean driving record with no serious traffic offences.
  • Experience operating organizational or commercial vehicles.
Preferred Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Experience driving ambulances.
  • Experience working with International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs).
  • Experience supporting humanitarian or emergency response operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge
Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of:
  • Uganda road traffic laws and regulations.
  • Defensive driving techniques.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics and maintenance.
  • First Aid and CPR procedures.
  • Fleet management practices.
  • Humanitarian principles including Sphere Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), and Red Cross Code of Conduct.
