CHILD PROTECTION OFFICER JOB – INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE (IRC) UGANDA

Job Overview
The Child Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring timely and high-quality implementation of Child Protection (CP) interventions across refugee settlements. The role works at household, community, parish, sub-county, and district levels to prevent and respond to child rights violations, strengthen protection systems, and ensure children are safely linked to services.
The position also focuses on awareness creation, capacity building, advocacy, coordination, and documentation of child protection issues and responses in the field.
Key Responsibilities
Program Planning and Implementation
  • Participate in planning, budgeting, and development of implementation plans for CP activities.
  • Facilitate timely execution of Child Protection interventions in line with IRC standards and approved models.
  • Mobilize stakeholders for planning meetings and community engagements.
  • Identify and support local child protection partners including parasocial workers.
  • Collect and document community feedback and protection concerns.
  • Document success stories and impact from CP interventions.
Capacity Building and Community Engagement
  • Train and mentor children, parents, teachers, and community structures on child protection issues.
  • Strengthen community capacity to engage in child protection advocacy and reporting.
  • Support grassroots child protection movements to prevent violence against children.
  • Promote awareness of child rights and responsibilities in communities.
  • Mobilize participation in key child protection events (e.g., Day of the African Child, Day of the Girl Child, 16 Days of Activism).
Coordination and Advocacy
  • Engage with local leaders, government institutions, and community stakeholders on CP issues.
  • Represent IRC in coordination meetings at settlement and district levels.
  • Strengthen referral pathways for child protection cases.
  • Promote inter-agency collaboration for protection service delivery.
  • Follow up on commitments made by local leaders regarding child welfare.
Child Protection, Safeguarding and Response
  • Monitor and report child abuse cases in line with IRC safeguarding guidelines.
  • Ensure children’s safety, dignity, and participation in all interventions.
  • Facilitate child participation in community decision-making processes.
  • Support advocacy and policy engagement on child protection issues.
  • Link vulnerable children to appropriate protection and support services.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
  • Apply standard M&E tools in all program activities.
  • Track implementation progress and ensure timely reporting.
  • Document lessons learned, best practices, and impact stories.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and activity reports.
  • Support development of IEC materials and learning resources.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Sociology, Law, Human Rights, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in protection programming (Child Protection, GBV, or protection monitoring).
  • Experience working with refugees, IDPs, or vulnerable populations in humanitarian settings.
  • Strong knowledge of protection principles, safeguarding, and child rights frameworks.
  • Experience in Program Cycle Management (PCM), M&E, and reporting.
  • Ability to design and deliver training to communities and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
