Job Description

Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) is seeking two Research Assistants to support a pilot randomized controlled trial evaluating peer-delivered, home-based PrEP care for rural female sex workers.

The successful candidates will support participant recruitment, screening, informed consent, enrolment, randomization, follow-up, research data collection, and participant retention. They will coordinate home- and clinic-based study activities and supervise Peer Workers delivering home-based PrEP services.

The Research Assistants will also support urine sample handling, data quality assurance, PrEP commodity monitoring, study documentation, adverse event reporting, protocol deviation reporting, participant reimbursements, budgeting, financial accountability, and study reporting.

Candidates should have knowledge of HIV prevention and PrEP care, experience working with populations at elevated risk of HIV, strong communication skills in English and Luganda, and the ability to travel regularly by motorcycle to study communities.

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Participant Recruitment: Recruit potential study participants according to approved study procedures and eligibility criteria.
  • Participant Screening: Conduct participant screening and support eligibility assessment.
  • Informed Consent: Explain study procedures and obtain informed consent in accordance with approved research protocols.
  • Participant Enrolment: Enrol eligible participants and support randomization procedures.
  • Participant Follow-Up: Conduct scheduled follow-up visits and maintain accurate participant records.
  • Participant Retention: Track participants, conduct tracing activities, and support retention throughout the study.
  • Peer Worker Supervision: Supervise Peer Workers delivering home-based PrEP services and provide guidance on study procedures.
  • PrEP Service Coordination: Coordinate community and clinic-based PrEP services, including refills, HIV self-testing support, adherence counselling, and referrals.
  • Research Data Collection: Collect accurate and complete quantitative and qualitative research data using approved study tools.
  • Participant Interviewing: Conduct participant interviews professionally while maintaining confidentiality and ethical research standards.
  • Specimen Management: Handle and document urine samples and other study specimens according to approved procedures.
  • Data Quality Assurance: Review collected data for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance with study requirements.
  • PrEP Commodity Monitoring: Monitor PrEP commodities and support proper documentation of their distribution and use.
  • Study Documentation: Maintain accurate study files, participant records, logs, forms, and other research documentation.
  • Safety Reporting: Report adverse events, protocol deviations, and other study concerns promptly to the appropriate study team.
  • Budget and Financial Support: Assist with study activity budgeting, participant reimbursements, financial accountability, and related reporting.
  • Field Coordination: Coordinate home-based and clinic-based research activities and regularly travel to study communities.
  • Study Reporting: Support preparation of routine research, field activity, and study progress reports.

Required Qualifications
 
  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as health sciences, social sciences, public health, nursing, clinical medicine, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of HIV prevention and PrEP care.
  • Experience working with key populations or populations at elevated risk of HIV.
  • Good communication skills in English and Luganda.
  • A valid motorcycle riding permit.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to rural study communities.

Required Skills and Experience
 
  • Research Data Collection: Ability to collect, record, and manage research data accurately.
  • Participant Interviewing: Experience conducting interviews and communicating professionally with study participants.
  • HIV Prevention Knowledge: Understanding of HIV prevention, PrEP, adherence support, HIV testing, and referral services.
  • Key Population Experience: Experience working with communities or populations at increased risk of HIV.
  • Computer Skills: Ability to use computers and electronic data collection or documentation systems.
  • Team Supervision: Ability to supervise, guide, and support Peer Workers and other field team members.
  • PrEP Experience: Previous experience providing or supporting PrEP services is an added advantage.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in English and Luganda.
  • Confidentiality: Ability to protect sensitive participant information and maintain research confidentiality.
  • Field Work: Ability to work independently and travel regularly to community-based study sites.
