Regenerate Africa is an organization focused on environmental conservation, sustainable development, community resilience, and nature-based solutions. The organization works with communities, government institutions, and development partners to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Regenerate Africa, in partnership with the Uganda Biodiversity Fund (UBF) and Nature Uganda, is implementing the project “Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation and Community Resilience in the Sango Bay and Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Sites” with financial support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
The project focuses on supporting wetland-dependent communities to develop sustainable livelihood opportunities while protecting biodiversity and natural resources.

Background

Communities living around the Sango Bay and Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Sites depend heavily on wetland resources such as fishing, farming along wetland boundaries, papyrus harvesting, and sand mining for their livelihoods.
This dependence has contributed to wetland degradation and biodiversity loss. Through Work Package 5 (WP5), Regenerate Africa is leading efforts to promote community resilience and sustainable nature-based enterprises among wetland-dependent communities.
Before implementing livelihood interventions, the project requires a detailed value chain and market analysis to understand community needs, market opportunities, income sources, resource use patterns, and sustainable enterprise opportunities.
Research Assistants will support the collection of field data across the project sites.

Purpose of the Assignment

The Research Assistant will support the implementation of the value chain and market analysis study across the Sango Bay and Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Sites.
The assignment aims to:
  • Establish baseline information on nature-based livelihood enterprises, value chains, and market dynamics.
  • Conduct livelihood and market analysis for nature-based enterprise opportunities.
  • Identify employment opportunities, income sources, household characteristics, market linkages, challenges, and community dependence on wetland resources.

Objectives of the Research Assistant Assignment

The Research Assistant will be responsible for:
  • Collecting household survey data while observing research integrity and ethical standards.
  • Conducting field observations using approved observation checklists.
  • Taking photographs and recording field notes to support research findings.
  • Collecting accurate information using digital data collection tools.

Project Study Areas

Research activities will be conducted in:
Sango Bay Ramsar Site (Kyotera District)
  • Musambwa Islands.
  • Adjacent wetlands.
  • Fishing landing sites.
Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Site (Masaka District)

Key Responsibilities

1. Pre-Field Training
The Research Assistant will:
  • Attend the mandatory orientation and training workshop before field deployment.
  • Learn how to use household survey tools on ODK digital platforms.
  • Participate in testing and piloting data collection tools.
  • Receive training in:
    • Research methods.
    • Interview techniques.
    • Digital data collection using ODK.
    • GPS coordinate collection.
    • Data quality control.
    • Research ethics and informed consent.

2. Household Survey Data Collection

The Research Assistant will:
  • Conduct household surveys using ODK digital tools.
  • Interview randomly selected respondents within assigned project locations.
  • Collect GPS coordinates of respondent households.
  • Ensure participation of both women and men according to gender inclusion requirements.
  • Meet assigned sample targets for the study area.

3. Field Observation Activities

The Research Assistant will:
  • Conduct structured observations on:
    • Livelihood activities.
    • Wetland resource use.
    • Market infrastructure.
    • Community economic activities.
  • Capture photographs of relevant activities with participant consent.
  • Record GPS coordinates for important observation points.
  • Take detailed field notes to support research analysis.

4. Data Submission and Reporting

Responsibilities include:
  • Upload completed ODK survey data daily.
  • Submit interview notes, focus group discussion notes, and checklists to the Field Supervisor within 24 hours.
  • Prepare a brief field report after completing data collection.
  • Highlight:
    • Key findings.
    • Community feedback.
    • Data quality issues.
    • Important field observations.
  • Participate in post-field review meetings with the Regenerate Africa research team.

5. Ethical Responsibilities

The Research Assistant must:
  • Obtain informed consent before collecting any information.
  • Explain the purpose of the study to respondents.
  • Protect confidentiality and privacy of participants.
  • Follow research ethics and the do-no-harm approach.
  • Handle all collected information responsibly.
  • Avoid sharing project data with unauthorized persons.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have:
  • Minimum qualification of a Diploma in a relevant field such as:
    • Social Work.
    • Environment Studies.
    • Public Health.
    • Development Studies.
    • Community Development.
    • Agriculture.
    • Related fields.
Additional requirements:
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Experience using smartphone/tablet-based data collection applications such as ODK.
  • Previous experience in household surveys, research, or field data collection.
  • Availability for the full assignment period.
  • Preference will be given to applicants residing in Kyotera or Masaka Districts.
  • Fluency in Luganda is mandatory.

Confidentiality Requirements

Research Assistants must:
  • Protect all collected information and research materials.
  • Maintain respondent confidentiality.
  • Avoid sharing research findings without authorization.
  • Return all survey tools, notes, and materials after completion of the assignment.

Contract Termination Conditions

The contract may be terminated due to:
  • Poor performance or failure to complete assigned duties.
  • Misconduct.
  • Providing false or inaccurate data.
  • Breach of confidentiality.
  • Failure to submit collected data or attend required activities.

Terms of Contract

Start Date: July 2026
Duration: Approximately 10–12 days including training, fieldwork, reporting, and debriefing.
Duty Station: Assigned sites within Sango Bay or Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Sites.
Contract Type: Short-term field assignment.
Remuneration: Daily allowance and transport facilitation (details provided upon selection).
Reports To: Field Coordinator / MEL Officer, Regenerate Africa.
