Job Summary
Nile Breweries is seeking an Operator responsible for safely operating and maintaining brewing processes to achieve optimal production effectiveness in line with VPO standards.
The Brewing Operator will also support the Brewing Process Operator with quality control checks, process monitoring, equipment maintenance, problem-solving, documentation, and continuous improvement activities.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Operating and Process Control
  • Operate manual equipment in brewing process areas according to approved work instructions.
  • Support the plant control system under the direction of the Brewing Area Manager.
  • Monitor process performance against production targets and record short stops.
  • Identify process trends, performance gaps, and potential problems and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Record waste and product movement using the appropriate documentation and information systems.
  • Review waste trends to identify potential operational problems.
  • Conduct required quality control checks and analyses.
  • Respond quickly to upstream and downstream issues that could affect product quality or production.
  • Apply approved problem-solving procedures when production issues occur.
  • Perform housekeeping activities while applying 5S/4S principles and safe working practices.
  • Identify and correct unsafe work practices.
  • Support fellow team members in completing assigned duties.
2. Plant and Equipment Maintenance
  • Carry out equipment cleaning, lubrication, and inspection according to work instructions.
  • Follow the approved Autonomous Operations schedule.
  • Perform basic autonomous maintenance tasks, such as replacing simple valves, where authorized.
  • Request assistance from the Process Artisan when maintenance activities require additional technical support.
  • Identify defective equipment and report issues to the Process Artisan or Brewing Area Manager.
3. Quality Control and Analysis
  • Perform required quality checks and analyses according to established work instructions.
  • Accurately record quality results in the relevant information systems.
  • Apply 5Y's and quick-fix problem-solving routines when quality issues arise.
  • Escalate problems requiring additional technical intervention.
4. Communication and Shift Handover
  • Participate actively in shift meetings.
  • Ask questions and contribute suggestions to improve team understanding and performance.
  • Use the gap list to document issues, problems, and improvement opportunities.
  • Understand team goals and participate in team goal review sessions.
  • Use communication tools such as the shift logbook to remain informed and share important information.
  • Complete effective shift handovers, ensuring incoming teams understand issues related to plant performance, quality, and maintenance.
5. Problem Solving
  • Apply 5Y's and quick-fix routines to investigate the possible causes of operational problems.
  • Report identified issues to the Process Artisan and/or Brewing Area Manager.
  • Provide relevant information to teams conducting detailed problem-solving exercises.
6. Continuous Improvement
  • Identify sources of production waste.
  • Report waste and improvement opportunities to the Brewing Area Manager.
  • Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving production efficiency, quality, safety, and equipment effectiveness.

  • Operate manual and automated machinery according to SOPs and operating standards.
  • Monitor production processes and apply appropriate reaction plans.
  • Execute ATO activities effectively.
  • Complete required shift documentation and update operator workstation and team-room records on time.
  • Apply 5S standards and workplace organization practices.
  • Maintain quality at source.
  • Apply administrative systems, procedures, and digital tools.
  • Contribute to personal and team development.
  • Perform other duties assigned by management.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should have one of the following:
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Food Science.
  • BSc in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Industrial Chemistry, or another related science discipline.
  • IBD certificate or completed brewing learnership, such as a Brewer's Diary or Brewing Certificate.
  • At least 1 year of work experience, preferably within the FMCG industry.
Ideal Candidate Profile
This role is suitable for candidates with technical, engineering, food science, chemistry, or brewing backgrounds who have an interest in manufacturing and production operations.
Experience working with production equipment, process control, quality checks, autonomous maintenance, workplace safety, and FMCG production environments will be an advantage.
