Wananchi Group is seeking an experienced and visionary Managing Director – Uganda to provide strategic leadership, drive business growth, improve operational performance, and strengthen the company’s market position within Uganda’s competitive telecommunications sector.

Job Summary

The Managing Director – Uganda will provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight of the company’s Uganda operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for driving revenue growth, market expansion, customer experience improvement, regulatory compliance, financial performance, and operational excellence while ensuring alignment with Wananchi Group’s regional and global strategy.
The Managing Director will oversee commercial, technical, financial, and administrative functions while representing the organization with government authorities, regulators, partners, customers, and industry stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership
The Managing Director will:
  • Develop and execute the Uganda country strategy in alignment with regional and global business objectives.
  • Identify growth opportunities in:
    • Broadband services
    • Enterprise connectivity
    • Fiber networks
    • Wireless solutions
    • Digital services
  • Lead market expansion and competitive positioning initiatives.
  • Drive operational turnaround strategies to improve financial and business performance.
  • Review organizational structures and recruit key leadership positions.
  • Establish strategies that support sustainable growth and long-term market leadership.

2. Commercial Growth and Revenue Management

Responsibilities include:
  • Own overall P&L performance and deliver revenue and EBITDA targets.
  • Drive growth across:
    • Business-to-Business (B2B) services
    • Business-to-Consumer (B2C) services
    • Direct-to-Home (DTH) business lines
  • Develop customer acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Improve customer lifetime value and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).
  • Strengthen sales partner management and governance processes.
  • Oversee sales, marketing, and product development strategies.
  • Improve Contact Centre performance and customer engagement.
  • Develop geographic expansion strategies to acquire new buildings and multi-dwelling units (MDUs).
  • Build strategic partnerships with:
    • Enterprises
    • Government institutions
    • Industry stakeholders
    • Technology partners

3. Operations and Service Delivery

The Managing Director will:
  • Transform operations to deliver reliable, high-quality network performance.
  • Improve customer service delivery standards for B2C and B2B customers.
  • Oversee network expansion projects including:
    • Fiber deployment
    • Wireless connectivity
    • Last-mile infrastructure
  • Manage infrastructure investments to support customer growth.
  • Establish effective contractor management systems.
  • Improve operational efficiency and cost management.
  • Develop scalable business processes to support expansion.

4. Regulatory and Government Relations

Key duties include:
  • Maintain strong relationships with:
    • Government authorities
    • Telecommunications regulators
    • Industry associations
    • Policy stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with telecommunications regulations and licensing requirements.
  • Represent the company in regulatory discussions.
  • Advocate for supportive industry policies.
  • Manage legal entities, licenses, and compliance requirements.

5. Financial Management

The Managing Director will:
  • Lead budgeting and financial planning processes.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Strengthen financial controls and governance.
  • Drive cost optimization initiatives.
  • Ensure efficient capital allocation.
  • Improve profitability and business sustainability.

6. Leadership and Talent Development

Responsibilities include:

  • Customer satisfaction scores (NPS/CSAT).
  • Regulatory compliance.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Business Administration

    • Computer Science
    • Related field
A postgraduate qualification in business, management, technology, or telecommunications will be an added advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • 12–15+ years of senior leadership experience.

    • Telecommunications
    • Internet Service Providers (ISP)
    • Technology companies
    • Digital services
  • Strong track record managing P&L responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success delivering business growth in emerging markets.

  • Experience working in African markets is highly desirable.
