CNOOC Uganda is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Legal Advisor to provide legal guidance, manage disputes, support compliance activities, and offer legal advisory services across company operations and projects.

Job Summary

The Legal Advisor will provide comprehensive legal support to CNOOC Uganda’s business operations by managing litigation matters, advising departments on legal risks, supporting compliance initiatives, reviewing contracts, and ensuring company activities comply with applicable laws and regulations.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments, external legal counsel, regulators, government authorities, contractors, and other stakeholders to protect the company’s legal interests.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Litigation Management & Dispute Resolution
The Legal Advisor will:
  • Monitor ongoing litigation cases and court proceedings.
  • Attend court hearings and legal proceedings when required.
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel.
  • Supervise case preparation and litigation strategies.
  • Support dispute resolution processes including arbitration and negotiations.
  • Provide updates and reports on legal cases to relevant stakeholders.

2. Legal Compliance Support

Responsibilities include:
  • Support implementation of the company’s compliance work plan.
  • Assist with compliance monitoring and due diligence activities.
  • Participate in anti-corruption and bribery risk assessments.
  • Support development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Promote compliance awareness across company departments.
  • Participate in compliance engagements with internal and external stakeholders.

3. Legal Advisory Services

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide legal advice to company departments on business operations.
  • Identify and manage legal risks affecting company activities.
  • Interpret laws, regulations, and policies affecting company operations.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and advise management accordingly.
  • Provide guidance on corporate governance and regulatory matters.

4. Contract Drafting & Review

Responsibilities include:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements.
  • Review company contracts and legal documents.
  • Provide legal advice during contract negotiations.
  • Review procurement contracts and agreements.
  • Ensure contracts comply with:
    • Ugandan laws
    • Regulatory requirements
    • Company policies
  • Support contract risk assessment and management.

5. Regulatory & Stakeholder Engagement

The Legal Advisor will:
  • Represent the company in meetings with:
    • Government authorities
    • Regulators
    • Contractors
    • Business partners
    • Other stakeholders
  • Provide legal guidance during negotiations and discussions.
  • Maintain professional relationships with external parties.
  • Support regulatory compliance activities.

6. Land Acquisition & Project Legal Support

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide legal support for land acquisition activities.
  • Review contractor agreements and project reports.
  • Participate in project meetings.
  • Support resolution of land-related disputes.
  • Provide legal assistance to company projects.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB).
Added advantage:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
  • Master’s Degree in Law or related discipline.

Experience Requirements

Candidates should have:
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Experience working in:
    • Oil & Gas
    • Energy
    • Infrastructure
    • Corporate legal environments
Preferred experience:
