Job Summary
Darling Uganda is seeking a qualified and experienced Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator to support the implementation and continuous improvement of the company's health, safety, and environmental management systems.
The successful candidate will coordinate day-to-day HSE activities, support compliance with applicable regulations, develop and implement safety procedures, conduct training and inspections, manage environmental risks, and provide technical HSE support across the company's operations.
The position is particularly relevant to candidates with experience in manufacturing, occupational health and safety, environmental management, waste management, emergency response, and workplace risk management.
Key Responsibilities
1. HSE Policy and Implementation
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement effective HSE policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Ensure HSE initiatives align with company objectives.
  • Provide technical support on health, safety, and environmental matters.
  • Contribute to the development of HSE plans, programmes, procedures, and policies.
  • Monitor implementation of HSE requirements across company operations.
2. Workplace Health and Safety
  • Ensure employees and visitors comply with applicable HSE requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn.
  • Promote safe working practices throughout the workplace.
  • Identify obvious workplace hazards and ensure they are corrected or reported to management.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment.
  • Identify foreseeable occupational hazards and recommend appropriate control measures.
3. Risk and Emergency Management
  • Ensure the factory has appropriate risk and emergency response plans.
  • Monitor implementation of emergency procedures.
  • Assist in coordinating emergency responses.
  • Support the administration of first aid when required.
  • Investigate incidents and violations involving HSE standards.
  • Recommend corrective and preventive actions following investigations.
4. HSE Training
  • Work with the Quality Assurance team to conduct training needs assessments.
  • Ensure employees receive appropriate Occupational Health and Safety training.
  • Plan and conduct HSE training programmes.
  • Coordinate with the Human Resources Manager to deliver employee safety training.
  • Promote awareness of safe working practices among employees.
5. Environmental Management
  • Ensure proper management and disposal of waste generated through company operations.
  • Ensure waste handling complies with relevant local and national regulations.
  • Monitor environmental risks associated with factory operations.
  • Support environmental audits and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Work to minimize environmental and health impacts associated with:
    • Dust
    • Odour
    • Noise
    • Vibration
    • Other operational nuisances
6. Pollution Control
  • Support implementation of appropriate pollution control mechanisms.
  • Help protect employees and surrounding communities from foreseeable environmental and workplace hazards.
  • Monitor environmental conditions around the factory.
  • Ensure environmental protection measures are properly implemented.
7. Effluent Treatment Plant
  • Ensure the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is monitored daily.
  • Monitor the condition and performance of the treatment plant.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance is carried out.
  • Escalate identified issues requiring technical or management intervention.
8. Regulatory Compliance and Audits
  • Ensure factory operations comply with applicable:
    • Environmental regulations
    • Occupational health and safety requirements
    • Local Government regulations
    • Other relevant regulatory requirements
  • Support internal and external environmental audits.
  • Assist in implementing corrective actions arising from audits and inspections.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with relevant regulatory authorities.
9. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Maintain positive and proactive relationships with:
    • Managers
    • Employees
    • Community representatives
    • Local municipal authorities
    • Regulatory agencies
  • Support effective communication and implementation of HSE programmes across relevant stakeholders.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Health Science, Environmental Management, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a similar HSE role, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
