VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT – GENDER & HUMAN RIGHTS INTERN

Contract Type: Internship (3–6 Months)
Supervision: Gender Programme Specialist / Programme Coordinator – Gender & Youth

Programme Context – Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment
UNFPA is a leading UN agency advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.
The programme supports:
  • Prevention and response to GBV
  • Strengthening survivor services and access to justice
  • Capacity building for police, judiciary, and health systems
  • Community awareness and empowerment of women and girls
  • Implementation of national policies and action plans on GBV
UNFPA works with government, UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society to improve protection, accountability, and access to services for survivors.
Job Purpose
The Intern will support the Gender & Human Rights Unit in implementing the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Programme. The role focuses on gender analysis, research, programme support, and strategic advisory on gender-based violence and harmful practices.
The internship includes structured learning, mentorship, and performance reviews to strengthen skills in gender programming, policy analysis, and UN operations.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Policy Analysis
  • Research, collect, and analyze information on gender equality, GBV, and UNFPA mandate areas.
  • Contribute to development of analytical briefs, notes, memos, and concept documents.
  • Keep updated on national and international developments in gender and human rights.
Programme Support
  • Support monitoring and evaluation of Gender & Human Rights programmes.
  • Review implementing partners’ quarterly reports and assist in tracking programme performance.
  • Contribute to development of tools for improved programme monitoring.
Knowledge Management
  • Document lessons learned and best practices from GBV interventions.
  • Support dissemination of findings and programme insights.
Communications Support
  • Assist in drafting communication materials on GBV and harmful practices.
  • Support editing and formatting of reports and documents.
  • Contribute to communication outputs in collaboration with the Communications Unit.
Meetings & Coordination
  • Support organization of meetings, workshops, and seminars.
  • Attend internal and external meetings as required.
  • Prepare meeting notes and summaries.
Administrative Support
  • Support correspondence with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with documentation and administrative tasks.
Qualifications and Eligibility
Applicants must meet one of the following:
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (Master’s or higher), OR
  • Final year of a Bachelor’s degree programme, OR
  • Recently graduated (within 1 year), OR
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate professional trainee programme.
Experience and Skills
  • Interest or experience in gender equality, women’s rights, GBV, or protection work.
  • Experience with development agencies or volunteer work is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Ability to work in multicultural and diverse environments.
  • Initiative, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Fluency in English (required).

Financial & Internship Conditions
  • Interns may receive a stipend if not supported by another institution.
  • Medical insurance is required for the full internship period.
  • UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
