Field Manager – NFT Consult (On Behalf of a Leading Cocoa Social Enterprise)

Location: Mayuge, Uganda
Job Type: Full-Time (1-Year Contract)

Job Summary

NFT Consult is recruiting on behalf of a rapidly growing social enterprise that sources specialty cocoa for export and manufactures premium bean-to-bar chocolate in Uganda. The organization works with more than 5,000 certified organic smallholder farmers and is committed to improving farmer incomes, promoting sustainable agriculture, and delivering fully traceable, high-quality Ugandan cocoa to international markets.
The Field Manager will provide leadership for all field operations within the assigned catchment area. The successful candidate will supervise field teams, oversee cocoa procurement activities, coordinate farmer certification programs, improve cocoa quality, and strengthen relationships with farming communities. This role is ideal for an experienced agricultural professional passionate about sustainable farming, rural development, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations Management
  • Lead and supervise Buyers, Field Officers, Senior Field Officers, and Inspectors.
  • Plan daily field schedules and allocate work effectively.
  • Monitor staff performance and ensure operational targets are achieved.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to field teams.
Procurement & Cocoa Quality Management
  • Supervise fresh cocoa procurement activities across assigned collection areas.
  • Ensure high-quality cocoa collection that meets export standards.
  • Monitor buyer performance and compliance with company procedures.
  • Coordinate pricing, harvest estimates, logistics, transport, and weighing activities.
Farmer Training & Capacity Building
  • Train farmers on cocoa agronomy, sustainable farming practices, and organic production.
  • Conduct Training of Trainers (ToT) programs for field staff.
  • Promote good agricultural practices to improve productivity and cocoa quality.
  • Support farmer adoption of climate-smart agriculture techniques.
Certification & Compliance
  • Coordinate Organic, Fair Trade, and other certification activities.
  • Manage farmer registration, contracting, surveys, inspections, and documentation.
  • Prepare farmers and field operations for annual certification audits.
  • Ensure compliance with certification standards across all farming communities.
Community Development
  • Build strong relationships with farmer groups and community leaders.
  • Identify and recommend community development initiatives.
  • Support implementation of agroforestry, financial literacy, digital payment, and sustainability projects.
  • Contribute to improved farmer livelihoods and environmental conservation.
Business Development
  • Identify opportunities for expanding cocoa sourcing into new collection areas.
  • Support strategic planning for branch growth.
  • Gather field intelligence to improve procurement efficiency.
  • Strengthen farmer engagement and supplier retention.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Host customers, investors, donors, auditors, and development partners during field visits.
  • Represent the company professionally within farming communities.
  • Maintain positive relationships with local government and agricultural stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science, Rural Development, Forestry, or a related field.
  • Additional training in sustainable agriculture or certification systems is an added advantage.

Experience Required

Candidates should demonstrate:
  • 2–4 years of experience in agricultural field operations.
  • Experience within cocoa, coffee, food production, agribusiness, or related agricultural sectors.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience leading field teams.
  • Practical experience delivering farmer training and extension services.
  • Experience managing procurement operations is highly desirable.

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

  • Based in Mayuge District with frequent travel to farming communities.
  • Willingness to live and work in rural areas for extended periods.
  • Regular field travel and outdoor work.
  • Interaction with farmers, cooperatives, community leaders, donors, and certification bodies.

Salary & Market Insight for This Role

Field Manager positions within Uganda's cocoa, coffee, and agribusiness sector typically offer competitive salaries ranging between UGX 3.5 Million and UGX 7 Million per month, depending on experience, certifications, and the size of operations.
