Twyford International Uganda is seeking an experienced and proactive Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to support safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible operations.
The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening workplace safety, environmental compliance, risk management, emergency preparedness, contractor safety, and employee awareness across industrial and manufacturing operations.
Job Summary
The EHS Specialist will be responsible for implementing and monitoring environmental, health, and safety standards across the organization. The role involves conducting workplace risk assessments, inspections, audits, and incident investigations while ensuring compliance with applicable Ugandan occupational safety and environmental legislation.
The successful candidate will work closely with employees, contractors, supervisors, and management to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, improve safety performance, and promote a strong workplace safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
Occupational Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Cap 231, as amended in 2025.
- Monitor workplace compliance with applicable health and safety regulations and organizational policies.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve EHS procedures and programs.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify unsafe conditions and practices.
- Maintain accurate EHS records, reports, registers, and compliance documentation.
Risk Assessment & Hazard Management
- Conduct comprehensive workplace risk assessments and job hazard analyses.
- Identify potential physical, chemical, environmental, and operational hazards.
- Recommend appropriate control measures using the hierarchy of controls.
- Monitor implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Follow up on identified safety risks to ensure timely closure.
Incident Investigation
- Investigate workplace accidents, near misses, injuries, and other EHS incidents.
- Identify immediate, underlying, and root causes of incidents.
- Prepare detailed incident investigation reports.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor implementation of actions to prevent recurrence.
EHS Training & Safety Culture
- Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees and contractors.
- Conduct safety inductions and toolbox talks.
- Promote employee awareness of workplace hazards and safe working practices.
- Encourage proactive reporting of hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
- Support management in developing a strong and positive safety culture.
Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the National Environment Act, Cap 181, and applicable environmental requirements.
- Support environmental compliance activities involving NEMA.
- Monitor environmental risks associated with manufacturing and industrial operations.
- Maintain appropriate environmental records and documentation.
- Support environmental inspections, audits, assessments, and regulatory reporting.
Waste & Hazardous Materials Management
- Oversee the safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of waste.
- Monitor management of hazardous substances and chemicals.
- Ensure appropriate controls are in place for hazardous materials.
- Monitor waste generation, emissions, and effluent management.
- Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve resource efficiency.
Emergency Preparedness & Fire Safety
- Lead workplace emergency preparedness initiatives.
- Develop, review, and implement emergency response procedures.
- Coordinate emergency drills and preparedness exercises.
- Support effective fire prevention and response measures.
- Ensure emergency equipment and systems are appropriately maintained and accessible.
- Provide employees with appropriate emergency response training.
Contractor Safety & Permit-to-Work Systems
- Monitor EHS compliance among contractors working on company premises.
- Conduct contractor safety inductions and awareness sessions.
- Verify contractor compliance with required safety standards.
- Implement and monitor Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems for high-risk activities.
- Ensure contractors conduct appropriate risk assessments and follow approved safety procedures.
- Stop unsafe activities where necessary and escalate significant risks to management.
Qualifications & Education
Applicants should have:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 4–6 years of relevant EHS experience, preferably within manufacturing, construction, industrial, or other high-risk operational environments.
- Strong knowledge of Ugandan occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Practical experience in workplace risk assessment and hazard identification.
- Experience conducting incident investigations.
- Experience developing and delivering EHS training.
- Knowledge of environmental compliance and NEMA requirements.
- NEBOSH, IOSH, or another relevant professional EHS certification is an added advantage.

Environmental Management
Knowledge of waste management, emissions, effluent, hazardous substances, and environmental compliance requirements.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to train employees and contractors on EHS requirements.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
Ability to analyze safety and environmental information, identify trends, and develop practical solutions to operational risks.
Leadership & Teamwork
Ability to influence employees, contractors, supervisors, and management while promoting a strong safety culture.
