ABSA is seeking a highly motivated Custody Operations Analyst to join its team on a 9-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will support custody operations by ensuring accurate securities processing, asset safekeeping, regulatory compliance, and exceptional client service.

Job Summary

The Custody Operations Analyst will ensure the accurate and timely processing of securities transactions, investment instructions, and custody activities. The role is responsible for safeguarding client assets, reconciling securities and cash positions, monitoring settlements, processing corporate actions, and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
The position requires close collaboration with custodians, depositories, fund managers, regulators, and internal stakeholders to deliver efficient custody services while minimizing operational risk.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Internal Business Processes (50%)
The successful candidate will:
  • Receive and process client and fund manager instructions through email and SWIFT messaging platforms.
  • Verify signatures and perform client call-backs where required.
  • Execute withdrawals, benefit payments, and fixed-income investment transactions.
  • Process both primary and secondary market securities transactions.
  • Maintain accurate custody and safekeeping records for both physical and electronic securities.
  • Process corporate actions including dividends, interest payments, bonus issues, and rights issues.
  • Monitor settlement activities and promptly report failed trades.
  • Ensure accurate billing and timely recovery of custody-related revenue.
Client Service (30%)
The successful candidate will:
  • Prepare accurate client statements, portfolio reports, and transaction summaries.
  • Ensure compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for client requests and transaction processing.
  • Monitor the performance of sub-custodians and other service providers.
  • Support onboarding of new custody clients and investment assets.
  • Resolve client inquiries promptly and professionally within agreed timelines.
  • Provide market information and prepare reports for Trustee meetings.
  • Submit regulatory reports accurately and within prescribed deadlines.
Reconciliation & Reporting (10%)
Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct daily reconciliation of securities and cash balances with depositories and sub-custodians.
  • Investigate reconciliation discrepancies and resolve outstanding items within agreed timelines.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and auditable custody records and client communications.
Compliance & Risk Management (10%)
The successful candidate will:
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and operational procedures.
  • Prepare and submit statutory returns to the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and Uganda Retirement Benefits Regulatory Authority (URBRA).
  • Apply maker-checker controls throughout custody operations.
  • Minimize operational losses through adherence to approved procedures and internal controls.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Banking, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.

Professional Certifications

The following certification will be an added advantage:
  • CMA Securities Certification
  • CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment) Certification

Experience

Applicants should have:
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in custody operations, securities settlements, investment operations, or financial services.
  • Experience working within banking, investment management, capital markets, or custody services is highly desirable.
