Nile Breweries is seeking a qualified and experienced Agronomy Officer to support sorghum farmers in the Dodoma region by providing technical guidance, improving crop yields, ensuring quality production, and supporting the company’s agricultural sourcing objectives.

Job Summary

The Agronomy Officer – Sorghum Production will be responsible for driving sustainable sorghum production by supporting farmers to achieve optimal yields, maintain quality standards, and meet supply targets.
The successful candidate will work directly with smallholder and commercial farmers, providing agronomic support throughout the farming cycle, promoting modern farming practices, monitoring crop performance, and ensuring compliance with recommended production standards.

Key Responsibilities

Farmer Mobilization and Registration
  • Mobilize, recruit, and register sorghum farmers within the assigned region.
  • Maintain accurate farmer records and production databases.
  • Support farmers in understanding production requirements and company sourcing standards.
  • Verify farmer acreage and determine input requirements.

Sorghum Production Support

  • Support farmers in land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting activities.
  • Ensure farming activities are conducted according to recommended agronomic practices.
  • Promote proper soil fertility management, moisture conservation, and crop rotation practices.
  • Ensure farmers use certified sorghum seed supplied by the company.
  • Guide farmers on correct seed rates and planting techniques.

Crop Monitoring and Technical Advisory

  • Monitor sorghum crops throughout the entire growth cycle.
  • Provide technical guidance on crop management practices.
  • Identify and advise farmers on pest infestations, diseases, and crop abnormalities.
  • Recommend appropriate corrective measures to improve crop health and productivity.
  • Ensure proper application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides at recommended rates.

Farmer Training and Capacity Building

  • Train farmers on improved sorghum production technologies.
  • Promote adoption of modern farming methods and best agricultural practices.
  • Encourage the use of mechanization, including planters, threshers, and other farming equipment.
  • Coach farmers on managing agriculture as profitable business enterprises.
  • Support farmers to improve productivity and income generation.

Sustainable Agriculture Practices

  • Promote environmentally sustainable farming methods.
  • Encourage soil conservation and responsible input usage.
  • Support implementation of sustainability initiatives within farmer communities.
  • Collect and report sustainability-related farming activities.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of:
    • Seed distribution
    • Seed uptake
    • Farmer registration
    • Planted acreage
    • Crop performance
    • Yield information
  • Prepare and submit timely monthly reports.
  • Provide updates on farmer activities, production progress, and challenges.
  • Support recovery of input costs advanced to farmers.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Agronomy or a related agricultural field.
  • Additional training in crop production, extension services, or sustainable agriculture is an added advantage.

Required Experience

Candidates should have:
  • At least 2 years’ experience in agronomy, agricultural extension, or farmer support programmes.
  • Experience working with:
    • Smallholder farmers
    • Commercial farmers
    • Agricultural value chains
    • Crop production programmes
  • Knowledge of sorghum production systems will be an added advantage.

  • Agricultural data collection and reporting.

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of Swahili will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to travel and work directly with farmers in rural communities.
