Job Summary

Space for Giants is seeking a skilled and innovative Conservation Technology Officer to support the implementation, administration, and maintenance of conservation technology systems at Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve.
The successful candidate will manage digital platforms and field technologies including EarthRanger, LoRaWAN infrastructure, camera traps, GPS devices, radio communication systems, and other conservation monitoring tools.
The role will provide technical support, troubleshoot hardware and software challenges, maintain data quality, support conservation data analysis, and train reserve staff on effective use of technology systems.
This position requires strong IT, GIS, data management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently in a remote and low-connectivity environment.

Key Responsibilities

EarthRanger System Management and Optimization
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve EarthRanger platform.
  • Ensure smooth functioning of EarthRanger systems to support conservation operations.
  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for EarthRanger usage.
  • Integrate trackable assets into EarthRanger, including:
    • Vehicles
    • Ranger patrols
    • Wildlife collars
    • Sensors
    • Other monitoring equipment
  • Update and manage patrols, missions, and conservation activities in accordance with Uganda Wildlife Authority systems.
Training and Capacity Building
  • Conduct training sessions for reserve staff on EarthRanger web and mobile applications.
  • Provide ongoing technical guidance and mentorship to rangers and field teams.
  • Build staff confidence in using conservation technology systems independently.
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices with team members.
Data Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting
  • Monitor EarthRanger and connected conservation technology systems.
  • Support effective use of data for:
    • Law enforcement operations
    • Community conservation activities
    • Human-wildlife conflict management
  • Develop dashboards, reports, and analytical tools to support decision-making.
  • Ensure accurate data collection, cleaning, storage, and reporting.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities through reliable data management.
IT and Field Technology Support
  • Provide ICT support for reserve operations.
  • Troubleshoot:
    • Hardware issues
    • Software challenges
    • Network connectivity problems
    • Communication equipment failures
  • Assess ICT infrastructure and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain and support field equipment including:
    • GPS devices
    • Radios
    • Camera traps
    • Sensors
    • Other conservation technologies
Conservation Technology Operations Support
  • Support deployment of new conservation technologies.
  • Maintain field technology infrastructure and equipment.
  • Assist with data integration, processing, and warehousing.
  • Display and prepare data for operational analysis.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Reserve Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification in:
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Science
    • GIS
    • Conservation Technology
    • Data Science
    • Related field

Essential Experience and Skills

Technical Skills
  • Proven proficiency in EarthRanger (mandatory).
  • Experience with conservation data management systems.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as:
    • Power BI
    • Tableau
  • Experience with geospatial software:
    • ArcGIS
    • QGIS
  • Strong IT and ICT troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite:
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint
Conservation Technology Experience
Experience with:
  • EarthRanger platform
  • GPS devices such as Garmin
  • VHF radio systems
  • Wi-Fi mesh networks
  • Remote communication technologies
  • Wildlife monitoring systems
  • Camera traps
  • Sensors and tracking technologies
Field Experience
  • Previous experience working in protected areas, wildlife conservation, or remote field operations is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work in rugged environments with limited connectivity.
