Alliance of Women Advocating for Change (AWAC) is a grassroots community-led organisation committed to advancing gender equity, social justice, health rights, economic empowerment, and community resilience among vulnerable and marginalised populations in Uganda.
AWAC is implementing the Six Agencies for Equity and Resilience in Health, Education, Economic, and Livelihoods (SAFER HEELs) Project, a multi-year initiative implemented through a consortium of six grassroots organisations.

The project aims to empower resilient communities in Uganda by enhancing wellbeing, promoting gender equity, increasing access to essential services, strengthening livelihoods, and building organisational capacity through collaborative action.

Background of the Assignment

Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) living in refugee settlements such as Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement continue to experience multiple socioeconomic challenges, including:
  • Limited access to education opportunities
  • Unemployment
  • Poverty
  • Dependency
  • Increased vulnerability to exploitation
  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
  • Poor health outcomes
  • Limited livelihood opportunities
  • Reduced food assistance due to funding challenges
  • Inadequate vocational skills
To address these challenges, AWAC established Community Health and Livelihood Enhancement Groups (CHLEG), which are savings groups designed to strengthen socioeconomic resilience and wellbeing among vulnerable women and girls in Terego and Madi-Okollo Districts.
Through this assignment, AWAC seeks to provide practical shoemaking training to 30 Adolescent Girls and Young Women under the CHLEG structure in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement.
The training will equip participants with practical vocational skills that can support:

Job Summary

AWAC is seeking an experienced Shoemaking Training Consultant/Trainer to design and deliver practical vocational training for 30 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement.
The consultant will be responsible for preparing training materials, delivering hands-on shoemaking sessions, mentoring participants, assessing skills development, and providing recommendations for sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The training will combine both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in shoemaking, entrepreneurship, product development, and business sustainability.

Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of this consultancy is to equip 30 CHLEG Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) with practical shoemaking skills to improve their livelihoods, economic empowerment, and wellbeing while contributing to economic resilience and sustainability.

Objectives of the Training

The consultant will support AWAC to achieve the following objectives:
  • Provide practical vocational training in shoemaking for 30 adolescent girls and young women.
  • Enhance technical and entrepreneurial skills to support self-employment and income-generating opportunities.
  • Strengthen participants’ ability to apply shoemaking skills for improved livelihoods.
  • Promote self-reliance, confidence, and empowerment through practical skills development and mentorship.

Scope of Work

Geographical Coverage
The training will be conducted in:
Ofua Zone
Terego District – Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement
Ocea Zone
Madi-Okollo District – Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement
Each location will have:
  • 15 participants
Total participants:
  • 30 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW)

Training Content

The consultant will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of shoemaking and entrepreneurship, including:
Introduction to Shoemaking and Entrepreneurship

Key Responsibilities of the Consultant/Trainer

Roles and Responsibilities of AWAC

Alliance of Women Advocating for Change will:
  • Procure and provide training materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Mobilise participants from Ocea and Ofua Zones.
  • Provide a suitable training venue.
  • Offer logistical support to trainees.
  • Facilitate coordination between trainer and participants.
  • Monitor implementation of training activities.
  • Ensure training objectives are achieved.
