Job Summary

Water Mission Uganda is seeking a Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership, engineering guidance, and quality oversight for the organization’s WASH projects.
Reporting to the Country Director, the Lead Engineer will support Water Mission’s mission of providing safe water solutions by leading engineering teams, reviewing technical designs, supporting field implementation, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and organizational procedures.
The role provides technical supervision to Water Mission Uganda’s engineers and technicians while ensuring quality, accuracy, innovation, and sustainability of water systems.
This is a full-time position based in Jinja, Uganda with periodic travel to remote project locations within Uganda and occasional international travel to support Water Mission objectives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Mission-Driven Leadership
The Lead Engineer will:
  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and demonstrate servant leadership.

  • Lead and participate in prayer sessions before and after team meetings.
  • Lead and participate in Bible-based staff devotions.

2. Technical Engineering Leadership and Staff Management

The Lead Engineer will:
  • Conduct engineering fieldwork and technical designs according to established engineering principles and Water Mission standards.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and technical support to engineers, technicians, and volunteers.
  • Review engineering outputs to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Train and mentor technical team members through capacity-building initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure successful project implementation and sustainability.
Key technical responsibilities include:
  • Conducting engineering assessments.
  • Designing water systems.
  • Developing technical plans and specifications.
  • Reviewing engineering drawings.
  • Supporting construction and implementation activities.

3. Water System Engineering and Design

The Lead Engineer will support:
  • Water source assessments.
  • Hydraulic system design.
  • Pumping system design.
  • Solar-powered water system design.
  • Electrical system design.
  • Structural design.
  • Water treatment system planning.
  • Storage and distribution network design.
The role will ensure all engineering designs meet Water Mission quality standards and sustainability requirements.

4. Quality Assurance and Technical Standards

Responsibilities include:
  • Championing Water Mission Technical Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures.
  • Ensuring engineering work is reviewed and verified by qualified engineers.
  • Conducting technical inspections and field quality checks.
  • Providing guidance to field engineers and technicians.
  • Ensuring compliance with approved engineering standards.

5. Field Assessments and Project Support

The Lead Engineer will:
  • Conduct community assessments and technical investigations.
  • Perform:
    • Water quality testing
    • Water quantity assessments
    • Survey measurements
    • Engineering evaluations
  • Conduct field visits to support project implementation.
  • Provide technical instruction to field teams.
  • Support disaster response activities and emergency engineering assignments.

6. Innovation and Technical Improvement

Responsibilities include:
  • Lead technical innovation initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve water system designs and operations.
  • Develop practical engineering solutions that increase sustainability.
  • Support adoption of improved engineering approaches and technologies.

7. Reporting and Documentation

The Lead Engineer will:
  • Prepare and submit accurate technical reports.
  • Produce monthly assessment reports with supporting photographs.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and records.
  • Prepare technical presentations for:
    • Operations teams
    • Strategic partners
    • Donors
    • Volunteers

8. Supply Chain and Resource Management

The role will:
  • Support Supply Chain activities through technical reviews.
  • Ensure procurement decisions reflect:
    • Good stewardship
    • Cost effectiveness
    • Project requirements
    • Water Mission values

Qualifications and Experience

Education Requirements
Applicants should have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, preferably:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
Added advantages:
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Project Management certifications.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.

Professional Experience

Candidates should have:
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in similar engineering project work.
  • Experience leading and managing technical teams.
  • Strong experience in WASH engineering.
  • Experience designing and implementing water systems.
  • Experience working on development or humanitarian projects.

  • Willingness to relocate and reside in Jinja, Uganda for at least 2 years.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for field assignments.
  • Valid Uganda driver’s license.
  • Legal authorization to work in Uganda.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
