The internship opportunity is supported by the SHEDS Project in partnership with the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS), University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
IDI is seeking a passionate and innovative Intern Volunteer – Software Development to support the development of digital platforms, health data applications, software tools, and research technology solutions.

Internship Summary

The Intern Volunteer – Software Development will support ACE Uganda’s software development activities by writing code, developing web applications, supporting databases, building user interfaces, and contributing to digital tools used in public health research.
The intern will gain practical experience working with software engineers, data scientists, and researchers while developing solutions that transform complex health data into meaningful digital insights.

Key Responsibilities

1. Software Development and Programming
  • Assist in writing clean, efficient, and maintainable software code.
  • Develop new features for ACE Uganda software platforms.
  • Support frontend and backend development activities.
  • Follow software development best practices and coding standards.
  • Participate in software improvement and testing activities.
2. Frontend Development
  • Build responsive and user-friendly web interfaces.
  • Connect frontend applications with backend APIs.
  • Support development of interactive dashboards and data visualisation tools.
  • Improve user experience and platform usability.
3. Backend Development and Data Systems
  • Support backend application development.
  • Assist with data workflows and processing activities.
  • Help load and manage public health datasets.

  • Work with APIs and backend services.
4. Machine Learning and Digital Health Applications
  • Support deployment of machine learning models into web-based applications.
  • Assist researchers in accessing and using data-driven tools.
  • Contribute to technology solutions supporting public health research.
  • Learn how artificial intelligence is applied in healthcare environments.
5. Software Testing and Quality Assurance
  • Conduct usability testing of software applications.
  • Perform backend database checks.
  • Support integration testing activities.
  • Conduct beta testing on different devices and platforms.
  • Identify software issues and assist in resolving technical problems.
6. Technical Support and User Assistance
  • Provide technical assistance for software tools used in:
    • VR Laboratory environments
    • Tele-Learning Centre activities
    • Research projects
  • Support users experiencing software challenges.
  • Assist with technology demonstrations and training activities.
7. Documentation and Technical Writing
  • Create clear technical documentation.
  • Develop:
    • Software architecture documentation
    • User manuals
    • API documentation
    • System guides
  • Maintain software development records.

Academic Qualifications
