About Uganda Tea Corporation Limited (UTCL)
Uganda Tea Corporation Limited (UTCL) is a leading tea production company located along the Kampala–Jinja Highway near Lugazi Municipal Council in Buikwe District, approximately 48 kilometres from Kampala City and 40 kilometres from Jinja, opposite Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga.
The company is primarily involved in the production and export of tea, with approximately 80% of its sales targeting international markets and 20% serving the local market. UTCL exports processed tea to the Mombasa Auction Market in Kenya, where it is traded alongside other East African tea companies.
In addition to tea production, UTCL is involved in other agricultural activities including:
- Afforestation
- Coffee production
- Cocoa farming
- Banana production
UTCL produces over 3.5 million kilograms of tea annually, contributing approximately 10% of Uganda’s national tea output.
Job Summary
Uganda Tea Corporation Limited (UTCL) is seeking a qualified and experienced Chief Accountant to oversee the company’s financial operations and ensure effective financial management, compliance, and reporting.
The Chief Accountant will be responsible for managing payments, debtors and creditors, payroll, statutory reporting, financial controls, and accounting operations while ensuring adherence to company policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will supervise the accounts team, prepare management reports, maintain accurate financial records, and provide reliable financial information to support strategic decision-making and protect company assets.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
- Oversee all financial operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payments, payroll, and statutory reporting.
- Prepare accurate financial reports for management decision-making.
- Ensure timely preparation of financial statements and accounting reports.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
Accounts Payable and Receivable Management
- Manage creditors and debtors to ensure effective cash flow management.
- Monitor supplier payments and customer collections.
- Ensure proper documentation and approval of financial transactions.
- Review payment processes to maintain accuracy and compliance.
Financial Controls and Compliance
- Implement and maintain strong internal financial controls.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and statutory requirements.
- Monitor financial processes to safeguard company assets.
- Support internal and external audit processes.
- Identify financial risks and recommend appropriate control measures.
Payroll and Statutory Reporting
- Oversee payroll preparation and ensure accuracy of employee payments.
- Ensure compliance with statutory obligations and reporting requirements.
- Maintain proper payroll records and documentation.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise and provide guidance to accounts department staff.
- Allocate responsibilities and monitor performance of accounting personnel.
- Promote professional development and effective teamwork within the finance department.
Management Support
- Provide financial guidance and insights to senior management.
- Prepare financial analysis to support business decisions.
- Maintain reliable accounting information for operational planning.
Qualifications and Requirements
Academic Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Accounting
- Finance
- Commerce
- Business Administration (Accounting/Finance option)
- A postgraduate qualification in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is an added advantage.
Professional Certification
Candidates should possess:
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
- ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)
- Or an equivalent recognised professional accounting qualification
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- At least 2–3 years of experience in a supervisory or senior accounting role.
- Experience managing financial operations, reporting, and accounting teams.
- Experience in manufacturing, agriculture, or similar industries is an added advantage.
