Job Title: Branch Manager (Banking)

JOB SUMMARY

To drive and deliver exceptional business performance through the provision of influential and consistent leadership, efficient business management, team development, and achievement of operational excellence within own branch.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Business Management (30%)
  • Implement business strategic initiatives and create ownership of branch performance targets
  • Agree branch execution plans aligned to bank strategy (Growth, Transformation, Returns)
  • Achieve annual branch sales and financial targets
  • Monitor weekly performance against targets
  • Ensure healthy branch balance sheet performance
  • Manage asset quality and minimize low-quality assets
  • Conduct market intelligence to identify opportunities, customer trends, and regulatory changes
  • Manage borrowing and non-borrowing accounts to improve retention
  • Build relationships with Top 200 clients and business influencers
  • Control branch costs including:
    • Overtime approvals
    • Equipment maintenance
    • Stationery and communication costs
    • Sundry losses
    • Staff costs
  • Approve/refund decisions within limits (PLA, sundry losses, customer refunds)
  • Send customer welcome packs after account opening
2. Customer Experience (20%)
  • Resolve customer queries and complaints (accounts, loans, cards)
  • Escalate unresolved issues to Prestige Branch Manager
  • Work with Operations and KYC Helpdesk for quick resolution
  • Direct customers to correct service channels (ATM, cashiers, drop boxes)
  • Inform customers when banking items are ready
  • Follow up on uncollected items
  • Encourage loan drawdowns
  • Manage customer queues during busy periods
  • Restock branch marketing materials
  • Ensure customer onboarding communication is done
3. People Management (20%)
  • Build and develop high-performing branch teams
  • Set performance objectives and measure success
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership
  • Manage staffing, resources, and coordination
  • Review attendance patterns and leave management
  • Ensure completion of e-learning and training
  • Conduct Training Needs Analysis and succession planning
  • Manage discipline, grievances, and performance issues
  • Initiate disciplinary procedures where necessary
  • Promote staff motivation and recognition
  • Ensure cross-training and job rotation
  • Build staff capability and succession pipelines
4. Branch Support (5%)
  • Open and close cashier tills with BOM
  • Authorize teller-limit transactions
  • Act as cash custodian (cash monitoring, balancing, ordering)
  • Perform any other assigned duties
5. Operational Rigour & Compliance (20%)
  • Ensure accuracy of account, loan, and credit documentation
  • Maintain KYC compliance and operational audit readiness
  • Ensure adherence to AML and banking regulations
  • Escalate unresolved compliance issues to Regional Manager
  • Conduct branch snap checks
  • Ensure full compliance with Absa policies and risk frameworks
  • Manage risk events and regulatory compliance
6. Citizenship (5%)
  • Participate in community events and networking
  • Support financial literacy and community initiatives
  • Build branch community presence and engagement
  • Link community initiatives to business opportunities
  • Promote Absa brand in local communities
OTHER DUTIES
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the bank

ROLE SPECIFICATION

Preferred Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or related field
  • Postgraduate education or professional certifications (added advantage)
Preferred Experience
  • 5 years in financial services sector
  • 3 years in retail and business banking
  • Front-line banking sales/marketing/service experience
