Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Driver supports the mission of Medical Teams International by providing safe and reliable transportation for authorized passengers and goods while ensuring that vehicles are maintained in proper technical and safety condition. The role also requires strict compliance with Uganda traffic regulations and MTI fleet management policies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate assigned vehicles in accordance with MTI fleet management procedures and Uganda road safety regulations to ensure the safety of staff, patients, volunteers, guests, and other passengers.
  • In emergency situations, assist nurses in administering First Aid and supporting patient care interventions where necessary.
  • Identify vehicle maintenance needs and immediately report any faults or safety concerns to the supervisor before transportation activities commence.
  • Deliver vehicles to approved service providers for scheduled maintenance and repairs including oil changes, washing, and mechanical servicing.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle movement records in the logbook and submit weekly inspection reports according to schedule.
  • Ensure the assigned vehicle always has adequate fuel for operations.
  • Ensure all passengers use appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Supervise proper loading and unloading of goods, verify deliveries against supporting documentation, hand over documents to recipients, and return completed paperwork to the Operations Department.
  • Confirm that passengers possess the necessary travel documentation before departure.
  • Keep the vehicle clean, organized, and free from debris at all times.
  • Identify and report operational, environmental, financial, and security-related fleet risks to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • In the event of accidents or emergencies, follow MTI emergency response procedures, support evacuation processes, and complete accident reports as required.
  • Ensure all required vehicle and driver documentation remains valid, updated, and available within the vehicle.
  • Participate in defensive driving and road safety training programmes.
  • Support safeguarding initiatives by promoting a safe working environment and adhering to Medical Teams International policies on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection, and workplace harassment prevention.
  • Remain alert to safeguarding risks and conduct duties in accordance with MTI safeguarding standards and Code of Conduct.
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications
  • Uganda Certificate of Education (O-Level) is required.
  • Valid driving licence with Classes A1, B, C1, and D1.
  • Certification in Defensive Driving from a recognized institution is required.
  • Valid certification in First Aid and CPR is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training or certification in vehicle mechanics and maintenance is an added advantage.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Required Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience driving heavy vehicles within Uganda.
  • Clean driving record is mandatory.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience operating ambulances and working with international NGOs is an added advantage.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong understanding of road safety regulations and defensive driving practices.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and mechanics.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR procedures.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian standards and principles such as Sphere Standards, CHS, and the Red Cross Code of Conduct.
  • Basic understanding of health systems and emergency response operations.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent defensive driving skills.
  • Ability to administer First Aid and CPR effectively.
  • Strong ability to identify and report vehicle maintenance issues.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES & ABILITIES

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and prioritize patient and passenger safety during stressful situations.
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting heavy items during loading and unloading activities.
  • Good record-keeping and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to follow emergency and accident response procedures accurately.
  • Commitment to supporting MTI Calling and adhering to the MTI Code of Conduct.
  • Professional, punctual, respectful, and courteous in conduct.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, up to 100% as required by the role.
