TIMBER PLANTATION PROGRAM MANAGER

Job Summary
The Timber Plantation Program Manager will provide operational and technical leadership for the establishment, management, monitoring, and harvesting of timber plantations across designated forest zones in Uganda. The role oversees both native species plantation programmes aimed at generating and maintaining verified carbon credits and commercial timber plantation programmes designed to deliver sustainable, revenue-generating harvests. The position ensures all plantation activities comply with international silvicultural standards, carbon certification methodologies, and approved operational budgets and timelines.
Key Responsibilities
Plantation Planning and Establishment
  • Lead assessment, land preparation, and plantation design in designated timber plantation areas.
  • Develop plantation establishment plans and implementation schedules.
  • Oversee nursery sourcing and seedling procurement for both native and commercial species.
  • Manage seasonal planting schedules to optimize survival rates and growth performance.
  • Ensure plantation establishment activities meet technical and environmental standards.
Carbon Forestry and Sustainability Management
  • Plan and implement planting programmes aligned with carbon certification methodologies.
  • Work closely with the Carbon Manager to ensure accurate collection of planting data, survival rates, biomass measurements, and other Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) requirements.
  • Apply species-appropriate silvicultural practices that maximize carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.
  • Support carbon credit generation and verification processes.
Commercial Timber Plantation Management
  • Collaborate with the Commercial Team to select commercially viable timber species suitable for Uganda’s climate, soils, and market conditions.
  • Develop and implement rotation management plans, pruning schedules, and thinning programmes.
  • Monitor plantation health, growth rates, and productivity indicators.
  • Provide technical guidance for harvest planning and timber production forecasting.
  • Support development of forward contracts and harvest volume projections.
Harvesting and Forestry Operations
  • Ensure all harvesting activities comply with national forestry regulations and industry best practices.
  • Monitor harvesting operations to ensure sustainability and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain quality standards throughout the timber production cycle.
  • Support operational planning for long-term plantation management.
Team Leadership and Capacity Building
  • Manage plantation technicians, nursery workers, field supervisors, and contractors.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field teams.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for planting, maintenance, monitoring, and harvesting activities.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Monitoring and Performance Evaluation
  • Conduct regular field assessments to evaluate plantation performance, survival rates, and ecological outcomes.
  • Monitor plantation growth and identify operational challenges requiring corrective action.
  • Track project milestones and performance indicators.
  • Ensure accurate data collection and reporting systems are maintained.
Community Engagement and Environmental Management
  • Coordinate with Community Liaison teams to facilitate local community participation in plantation activities.
  • Promote sustainable land use and community-inclusive forestry practices.
  • Advise on soil conservation, water resource management, climate adaptation measures, pest management, and disease control strategies.
  • Support environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation initiatives.
Reporting and Stakeholder Management
  • Prepare periodic technical and operational reports for management, investors, donors, and government stakeholders.
  • Present project progress, plantation performance, and environmental outcomes.
  • Support stakeholder engagement and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and records.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
  • PhD or Master’s Degree in Forestry, Silviculture, Wood Science, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in plantation forestry or timber management.
  • At least three (3) years in a technical leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing both native species restoration programmes and commercial timber plantations.
  • Practical knowledge of silvicultural systems relevant to East African forestry conditions.
  • Familiarity with carbon project methodologies and forest carbon MRV systems.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary field teams and contractor relationships.

  • Deep knowledge of plantation silviculture, species selection, forest ecology, and timber production systems.
  • Strong understanding of carbon forestry, forest restoration, and climate-smart forestry practices.
  • Knowledge of timber markets, product quality standards, and harvest value optimization.
