Job Summary
Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is seeking a qualified and compassionate Students’ Counselor to provide ethical and professional counseling services that support students’ mental health, emotional well-being, academic success, and personal development.
The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting student welfare through counseling, psychosocial support, wellness programming, crisis intervention, referrals, and collaboration with academic and health support services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Student Counseling & Mental Health Support
  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions addressing academic stress, mental health challenges, relationships, career choices, and life transitions.
  • Build trust-based therapeutic relationships using trauma-informed and student-centered counseling approaches.
  • Promote emotional resilience, personal growth, and student well-being.
Psychosocial Assessment & Intervention
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments and risk evaluations.
  • Develop and implement appropriate intervention plans.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialized services including psychiatric care, NGOs, and healthcare providers where necessary.
Student Wellness & Preventive Programs
  • Design and facilitate student wellness programs and workshops.
  • Support initiatives on stress management, resilience, sexual health, substance abuse prevention, and mental wellness.
  • Participate in student orientation and mentorship programs.
Collaboration & Student Support Services
  • Work closely with academic staff, Health Services Centre, Disability Resource & Learning Centre, and external service providers.
  • Ensure coordinated care while maintaining confidentiality and informed consent.
Records Management & Compliance
  • Maintain confidential counseling records and case notes.
  • Ensure compliance with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.
  • Prepare reports while safeguarding student privacy and confidentiality.
Research & Student Welfare Monitoring
  • Collect anonymized data and insights on student welfare trends.
  • Support policy development and student support programming.
  • Contribute to evidence-based decision-making within student affairs.
Professional Development & Crisis Response
  • Participate in clinical supervision and continuous professional learning.
  • Engage in reflective practice and self-care initiatives.
  • Participate in emergency response and campus well-being programs.
  • Provide support during crises and high-risk situations.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Dean of Students.

Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Psychology
    • Guidance and Counseling
    • Social Work
    • Education (Counseling Option)
    • Or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ post-qualification experience in:
    • Student counseling
    • Youth psychosocial support
    • Clinical or community counseling
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Ugandan counseling ethics
    • Confidentiality standards
    • Data protection principles
    • University student welfare policies
  • Must be a Ugandan citizen below 50 years of age
Added Advantage
  • Master’s Degree in:
    • Counseling Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Guidance and Counseling
  • Experience working in a university or higher education environment
