Information Risk Management Apprentice – ABSA Bank Uganda

Job Summary
The Information Risk Management Apprentice will support the Information Risk Management (IRM) function in protecting Absa Bank Uganda’s information assets through the implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of controls across Logical Access Management, Data Privacy, and Records Management.
The role provides hands-on experience in information security, risk management, governance, compliance, and banking control environments while promoting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information assets.
Job Purpose
To support the Information Risk Management team in managing information-related risks, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and strengthening the bank’s risk-aware culture through effective access controls, data privacy practices, and records management processes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Logical Access Management
  • Assist in provisioning system access based on approved requests
  • Support periodic User Access Reviews (UAR) across critical banking systems
  • Assist business owners in validating user access rights
  • Track and follow up on access review exceptions and remediation actions
  • Maintain audit evidence for completed access recertification exercises
  • Identify and flag segregation of duties (SoD) conflicts
  • Support monitoring and control of privileged and high-risk accounts
  • Assist in periodic reviews of administrator and super-user accounts
  • Ensure compliance with Absa Group access management policies
  • Support automation and process improvement initiatives
2. Data Privacy & Protection
  • Support compliance with the Uganda Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019
  • Assist in implementing data privacy frameworks, standards, and controls
  • Maintain the Record of Processing Activities (RoPA)
  • Participate in Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
  • Support handling of data subject requests, including access, correction, and deletion requests
  • Assist in tracking privacy incidents and data breaches
  • Monitor third-party compliance with data protection requirements
  • Support implementation of privacy controls across business units
3. Records Management
  • Support implementation of records management policies and procedures
  • Maintain records inventories and classification registers
  • Assist in records retention and disposal scheduling
  • Support secure storage, archival, retrieval, and destruction of records
  • Participate in records management audits and compliance reviews
  • Promote awareness of proper records handling practices
4. Continuous Learning & Improvement
  • Develop knowledge in information security, privacy, and risk management
  • Stay updated on emerging threats, regulations, and industry best practices
  • Support process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives
  • Contribute to strengthening governance and control environments
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Accuracy and timeliness of user access management
  • Reduction in unauthorized or excessive access risks
  • Timely handling of data subject requests
  • Accuracy and completeness of records inventories
  • Compliance with retention and disposal requirements
  • Efficiency of records retrieval and archival processes
  • Reduction in audit findings related to records and access management
Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Information Technology
    • Information & Cyber Security
    • Records and Archives Management
    • Related discipline
Academic Requirements
  • First Class or Second-Class Upper Degree
  • O’Level: Credit or higher in Mathematics and English
  • A’Level: Minimum of two principal passes
  • Graduation year between 2024 and 2026
Technical Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of Information Security and Risk Management principles
  • Knowledge of Data Protection and Privacy regulations
  • Understanding of Identity and Access Management concepts
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Exposure to document management and access management systems is an advantage
  • Knowledge of software, hardware, and operating systems
  • Knowledge of Uganda data protection laws is an added advantage
