JOB VACANCY: LEGAL OFFICER (INTERNAL JUSTICE SYSTEM)

JOB SUMMARY
The Legal Officer will support the internal justice system of the United Nations by providing legal assistance, representation, and advisory services to staff members involved in administrative, disciplinary, and appellate proceedings before the UN Dispute Tribunal and UN Appeals Tribunal.
The role reports to the Chief of OSLA under the authority of the Executive Director of the Office of Administration of Justice.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. LEGAL REPRESENTATION & ASSISTANCE
  • Provide legal assistance to UN staff within the justice system
  • Represent and litigate cases before UN Dispute Tribunal and Appeals Tribunal
  • Prepare written and oral legal submissions
  • Identify cases suitable for mediation or settlement
2. LEGAL ANALYSIS & ADVICE
  • Advise on appeals against administrative and disciplinary decisions
  • Identify legal issues and review complex case documents
  • Conduct legal research and jurisprudence analysis
  • Draft legal opinions, submissions, and correspondence
3. CASE MANAGEMENT & PROCEDURAL WORK
  • Ensure compliance with procedural requirements in filings
  • Maintain legal databases and case registers
  • Assist in preparation of reports to the General Assembly
  • Support administrative and budgetary requirements
4. LITIGATION WORK
  • Conduct hearings before tribunals
  • Lead and cross-examine witnesses
  • Present legal arguments before judges
  • Handle multiple concurrent cases under tight deadlines
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in International Law
    OR
  • First-level degree plus 2 additional years of relevant experience
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 5 years’ progressively responsible legal experience
  • At least 2 years’ litigation experience (national or international level)
  • Experience in UN or similar international organizations is an advantage
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
  • English is required
  • French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, or Russian is desirable
