Job Title: Unit Manager

Job Summary

The Unit Manager will be responsible for recruiting, developing, coaching, and managing a team of insurance agents to achieve agreed sales targets, productivity goals, and business retention objectives.
The role focuses on driving sustainable growth through effective sales leadership, field supervision, agent development, performance management, and execution of insurance sales strategies. The successful candidate will build a high-performing sales unit while ensuring compliance with insurance regulations, company policies, and ethical business practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sales Team Recruitment & Development
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop a productive team of insurance agents.
  • Build and maintain a unit consisting of at least 15 active agents.
  • Identify talented individuals with potential to succeed in insurance sales.
  • Conduct agent orientation, coaching, and continuous development programs.
  • Support agents in achieving personal and team sales goals.

2. Sales Performance Management

  • Drive achievement of unit production, productivity, and business retention targets.
  • Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales activities.
  • Develop and implement effective sales strategies to increase market penetration.
  • Track agent performance and provide guidance to improve results.
  • Ensure achievement of monthly, quarterly, and annual business targets.

3. Field Supervision & Team Leadership

  • Conduct regular field visits to support and supervise sales agents.
  • Monitor customer engagement activities and sales processes.
  • Hold daily sales huddles and weekly team meetings to review performance.
  • Motivate and inspire team members to achieve excellence.
  • Create a positive, accountable, and high-performance sales culture.

4. Training, Coaching & Capacity Building

  • Identify skills gaps and training needs within the sales team.
  • Organize coaching sessions and sales development activities.
  • Provide mentorship to improve agent productivity.
  • Train agents on insurance products, customer service, and sales techniques.
  • Promote continuous learning and professional growth.

5. Business Growth & Customer Retention

  • Develop strategies to increase insurance sales and customer acquisition.
  • Ensure policies generated by agents remain active through proper customer follow-up.
  • Promote excellent customer relationships and service delivery.
  • Monitor business persistency and retention rates.
  • Support agents in building long-term customer relationships.

6. Reporting & Performance Tracking

  • Prepare and submit weekly progress reports to management.
  • Maintain accurate records of agent activities and sales performance.
  • Analyze sales reports and recommend improvement strategies.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including:
    • Agent recruitment and retention.
    • Premium production.
    • Number of policies sold.
    • Agent productivity.
    • Business persistency.
    • Training activities.

7. Regulatory Compliance & Ethical Standards

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, insurance regulations, and industry standards.
  • Obtain and maintain authorization from the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) to operate as an insurance agent.
  • Complete and pass the Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Insurance examinations within the required timeframe.
  • Promote ethical sales practices and professional conduct.
  • Ensure all insurance transactions meet regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

Academic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Business Administration
    • Marketing
    • Sales
    • Insurance
    • Finance
    • Economics
    • Commerce
    • Any related field from a recognized institution.
Added Advantage:
  • Diploma qualification combined with strong sales management experience.

Professional Qualifications

  • Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Insurance or willingness to obtain it.
  • Registration and licensing with the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) as an Insurance Agent.
  • Additional qualifications in:
    • Sales Management

will be an added advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in:
    • Insurance sales
    • Business development
    • Marketing
    • Financial services
    • Direct sales
  • Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring a sales team is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in:
    • Life insurance
    • Banking
    • Microfinance
    • SACCOs
    • Telecommunications
    • FMCG
will be an added advantage.
