Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) is a leading health research organisation in Uganda involved in biomedical research, clinical studies, and public health programmes. The organisation conducts community-based research aimed at improving healthcare services, disease prevention strategies, and public health outcomes.
RHSP is seeking qualified Registered Nurses or Comprehensive Nurses to join its field research team in Kalisizo. The successful candidates will support community-based research activities by recruiting study participants, conducting interviews, providing health education and HIV counselling, collecting biological specimens, and ensuring accurate data collection while following research protocols and ethical standards.
Job Summary
The Research Assistant (Nurse) will support RHSP research activities by working directly with communities, study participants, and research teams. The role involves participant recruitment, obtaining informed consent, conducting field interviews, providing health education, collecting biological specimens, and maintaining high-quality research records.
Working under the supervision of research coordinators, the successful candidate will support participant follow-up, clinical referrals, biosafety procedures, infection prevention practices, and accurate documentation of research activities.
The ideal candidate should have strong nursing skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, commitment to ethical research practices, and the ability to work effectively within communities across Rakai and Kyotera districts.
Key Responsibilities
Participant Recruitment and Community Engagement
  • Recruit eligible participants for RHSP research studies.
  • Explain research procedures and obtain informed consent according to approved ethical guidelines.
  • Engage with community members and build trust with study participants.
  • Support community mobilisation activities related to research programmes.
Field Interviews and Data Collection
  • Conduct participant interviews using approved research questionnaires and data collection tools.
  • Collect accurate and complete participant information.
  • Ensure timely recording and submission of research data.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of participant records.
Clinical Support and Health Education
  • Provide health education and HIV counselling to study participants.
  • Conduct participant assessments and provide appropriate health guidance.
  • Support clinical referrals where necessary.
  • Assist participants throughout the research process while maintaining professional standards.
Biological Specimen Collection
  • Collect biological specimens according to approved research procedures.
  • Follow biosafety and infection prevention guidelines during specimen collection.
  • Ensure proper identification, handling, storage, and transportation of specimens.
  • Maintain quality standards during all laboratory-related field activities.
Research Compliance and Documentation
  • Follow study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and ethical requirements.
  • Maintain accurate research documentation and records.
  • Participate in research meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement activities.
  • Report field challenges and study-related concerns to research coordinators.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Must Have
Diploma in Nursing
Applicants must possess a recognised diploma qualification in Registered Nursing, Comprehensive Nursing, or a related nursing field.
Valid Practicing Licence
Candidates must have a valid nursing practicing licence from the relevant professional regulatory authority.
One-Year Nursing Experience
Applicants should have at least one year of practical nursing experience, preferably in community health, clinical services, or healthcare programmes.
Fluency in Luganda
Ability to communicate fluently in Luganda is required to effectively interact with study participants and communities.
Computer Skills
Basic computer literacy and ability to use digital data collection tools, electronic records, and computer systems.
Additional Qualifications (Added Advantage)
  • Previous experience in health research or clinical research projects.
  • Experience working with communities and study participants.
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle.
  • Possession of a valid Class A Permit.
  • Experience in community engagement and mobilisation.
  • Knowledge of biosafety and infection prevention practices.
