Project Background

Walimu is implementing the Risk-Enhanced Community Care After Discharge (REConneCteD) project, a digital health intervention designed to improve continuity of care for children after hospital discharge.
The project integrates:
  • Hospital Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).
  • Electronic Community Health Information Systems (eCHIS).
  • Community Health Worker (CHW) follow-up systems.
The intervention enables better communication between health facilities and community health workers, supporting risk-based follow-up of children after discharge.
The study is being conducted as a multicentre, two-batch stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial in Uganda and Kenya.
The main objective is to evaluate whether REConneCteD reduces post-discharge mortality among children aged up to 16 years admitted with infectious illnesses while improving:
  • Continuity of care.
  • Follow-up support.
  • Care-seeking behaviors after discharge.

Job Summary

Walimu is seeking four Junior Research Nurses to support implementation of the REConneCteD research project.
Reporting to the Site Team Leader, the Junior Research Nurses will work closely with:
  • Clinicians.
  • Field Officers.
  • Hospital teams.
  • Study coordinators.
  • Research staff.
The successful candidates will support participant recruitment, clinical assessments, research data collection, participant follow-up, and maintenance of high-quality study documentation.
The role requires strong nursing skills, attention to detail, ethical conduct, and commitment to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

Key Responsibilities

1. Participant Screening and Recruitment
The Junior Research Nurse will:
  • Identify potential research participants at study sites.
  • Assess patient eligibility according to study criteria.
  • Support recruitment of eligible participants.
  • Explain study procedures to patients and caregivers.

2. Informed Consent Management

Responsibilities include:
  • Obtaining informed consent from participants or caregivers.
  • Ensuring participants understand study information.
  • Following ethical research procedures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality throughout the consent process.

3. Clinical Data Collection

The nurse will:
  • Collect required clinical information during hospitalization.
  • Conduct patient assessments.
  • Record patient histories.
  • Monitor vital signs and clinical progress.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of study information.

4. Specimen Collection and Laboratory Support

Responsibilities include:
  • Collecting required biological specimens.
  • Supporting appropriate laboratory procedures.
  • Following infection prevention and control standards.
  • Maintaining specimen quality and documentation.

5. Electronic Data Management

The Junior Research Nurse will:
  • Capture study data using electronic tablets.
  • Ensure accurate and complete data entry.
  • Maintain data quality and integrity.
  • Support use of digital data collection platforms.
Platforms may include:
  • REDCap.
  • CommCare.
  • Open Data Kit (ODK).
  • KoboCollect.
  • Similar electronic systems.

6. Participant Follow-Up Activities

Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting follow-up activities after discharge.
  • Coordinating with study teams and healthcare workers.
  • Tracking participant progress according to study protocols.
  • Reporting participant-related concerns.

7. Research Protocol Compliance

The nurse will:
  • Follow approved study protocols.
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.
  • Ensure ethical and regulatory compliance.
  • Support quality assurance activities.

8. Team Collaboration

The role requires:
  • Working closely with Site Team Leaders.
  • Supporting Study Coordinators.
  • Collaborating with hospital clinical teams.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with healthcare workers.

9. Professional Conduct and Confidentiality

The Junior Research Nurse must:
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant information.
  • Protect research data.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements
Applicants must have:
  • Certificate or Diploma in Nursing.
  • Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • Valid nursing practicing licence.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
Candidates without current GCP certification should be willing to complete training before study commencement.

Experience Requirements

Applicants should have:
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
Preferred experience includes:
  • Pediatric nursing.
  • Emergency care.
  • Neonatal care.
  • Outpatient department experience.
