Job Summary
Mengo Hospital is seeking qualified and experienced Registered Nurses with Critical Care Skills (ALS & BLS) to provide specialized nursing care to critically ill patients and those recovering from major surgeries. The successful candidates will apply advanced clinical skills, demonstrate quick decision-making abilities, respond effectively to emergencies, and provide compassionate support to patients and their families.
The role requires professionals with strong critical care experience who can work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams while maintaining high standards of patient safety, confidentiality, and quality care.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Monitoring and Clinical Assessment
  • Conduct regular monitoring and assessment of critically ill patients.
  • Observe patients’ conditions and identify changes requiring medical intervention.
  • Monitor vital signs, treatment responses, and recovery progress.
  • Provide appropriate nursing interventions based on patient needs.
Treatment Administration and Patient Care
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately.
  • Provide specialized nursing care to patients in ICU, HDU, and emergency care settings.
  • Assist patients recovering from major surgeries and critical illnesses.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning, comfort, and overall wellbeing.
Critical Decision-Making and Emergency Response
  • Respond quickly and effectively to medical emergencies.
  • Apply Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) skills when required.
  • Support emergency procedures and stabilization of critically ill patients.
  • Escalate patient concerns promptly to relevant healthcare professionals.
Use and Management of Advanced Equipment
  • Operate and monitor critical care equipment appropriately.
  • Ensure proper handling of ICU/HDU monitoring systems and medical devices.
  • Report equipment issues and maintain safe clinical environments.
Documentation and Communication
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient information and nursing care provided.
  • Communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, patients, and families.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary healthcare team discussions.
  • Provide clear updates and support to patient families during critical moments.
Family Support and Patient Advocacy
  • Provide emotional support and education to families of critically ill patients.
  • Help families understand care options and make informed decisions.
  • Support families during difficult healthcare situations, including end-of-life care discussions.
Infection Prevention and Patient Safety
  • Follow strict infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and respect privacy rights.
  • Promote safe nursing practices and compliance with hospital policies.
  • Ensure a clean and safe patient care environment.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Must be registered with the relevant nursing regulatory body in Uganda.
  • Must possess Critical Care Certification in Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience working in critical care areas such as:
    • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
    • High Dependency Unit (HDU)
    • Accident & Emergency (A&E)
    • Other recognized critical care settings
