Kijani Forestry is seeking an experienced Plantation Growth Officer (PGO) to provide strategic leadership for plantation and woodlot management programmes. The successful candidate will oversee Plantation Growth Supervisors and Plantation Growth Coordinators, ensuring high plantation survival rates, quality silvicultural practices, effective farmer engagement, and accurate field data management.

Job Summary

The Plantation Growth Officer will lead the planning, coordination, supervision, and continuous improvement of plantation growth programmes across multiple operational areas.
Working closely with field teams, community stakeholders, and management, the successful candidate will oversee plantation performance, supervise field staff, coordinate monitoring and evaluation activities, strengthen farmer engagement, support programme expansion, and ensure compliance with forestry, environmental, and organisational standards.
The ideal candidate should possess strong forestry knowledge, leadership experience, analytical skills, and the ability to manage field operations in rural communities.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Supervision
  • Supervise Plantation Growth Supervisors and ensure effective oversight of Plantation Growth Coordinators.
  • Conduct monthly staff performance reviews and coaching sessions.
  • Provide field mentorship through demonstrations and joint supervision visits.
  • Promote staff discipline, ethical conduct, and adherence to work plans.
  • Build staff capacity through continuous technical guidance.
Strategic Plantation Management
  • Oversee implementation of plantation establishment and silvicultural activities.
  • Monitor plantation quality and survival rates across assigned regions.
  • Identify high-risk plantation sites and coordinate corrective interventions.
  • Ensure seasonal plantation activities align with approved work plans.
  • Resolve operational challenges affecting plantation growth.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)
  • Ensure timely implementation of plantation survival assessments.
  • Verify the quality and accuracy of field data.
  • Review causes of plantation mortality and approve corrective actions.
  • Work closely with Monitoring and Evaluation teams on sampling and verification.
  • Validate plantation performance dashboards and reports.
Farmer Engagement and Community Coordination
  • Support technical training programmes for farmers.
  • Conduct community sensitisation on plantation protection and fire prevention.
  • Ensure farmer and plantation information is updated for carbon payment programmes.
  • Build positive relationships with local leaders and community stakeholders.
  • Promote compliance with sustainable forestry practices.
Reporting and Documentation
  • Review weekly reports submitted by field teams.
  • Prepare regional plantation performance reports.
  • Maintain complete documentation for audits and carbon verification.
  • Monitor implementation of agreed action plans.
  • Ensure timely submission of operational reports.
Expansion Programme Support
  • Conduct field assessments for new operational areas.
  • Evaluate soil conditions, climate suitability, and community readiness.
  • Assess farmer participation potential.
  • Recommend expansion opportunities and resource requirements.
  • Support onboarding of new operational areas.
Resource Management
  • Monitor allocation and utilisation of field equipment, transport, and personal protective equipment.
  • Approve seasonal resource requests.
  • Ensure accountability for organisational resources.
  • Promote efficient use of operational resources.
Support During Planting Seasons
  • Coordinate technical support for seasonal planting activities.
  • Supervise seedling distribution and plantation establishment.
  • Resolve technical field challenges.
  • Document lessons learned to improve future planting programmes.
Training and Capacity Building
  • Deliver practical forestry training to interns and field teams.
  • Organise refresher training based on identified performance gaps.
  • Support development of training materials.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of field training programmes.
Compliance, Safety and Environmental Protection
  • Ensure compliance with forestry regulations and environmental standards.
  • Promote implementation of fire prevention measures.
