Job Summary
Mengo Hospital is seeking a qualified and compassionate Optometrist to join its Eye – Optical Section. The successful candidate will conduct comprehensive eye examinations, diagnose vision problems, prescribe corrective lenses, and support the management of common eye diseases in collaboration with ophthalmologists. This role offers an excellent opportunity for dedicated eye care professionals who are passionate about delivering quality patient-centered services.
Key Responsibilities
  • Take detailed patient histories and perform visual acuity tests.
  • Conduct comprehensive eye examinations to detect refractive errors, eye diseases, and other visual impairments.
  • Measure patients' refractive errors to determine accurate prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Perform basic orthoptic and squint (strabismus) assessments, including ocular alignment and binocular vision evaluations within the scope of practice.
  • Support ophthalmologists and other eye care specialists in managing common eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome.
  • Advise patients on suitable corrective lenses based on their visual needs.
  • Fit and dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Educate patients on eye health, preventive eye care, and proper use of corrective lenses.
  • Respond to patient concerns and provide professional eye care guidance.
  • Promote optical products and services, including frames, lenses, and eye care packages.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Diploma in Optometry from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Must be registered with the relevant medical board in Uganda and licensed to practice optometry.
  • Additional certifications in eye care or optical practice will be an added advantage.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in optometry practice from a recognized health facility.
  • Candidates without prior experience must demonstrate willingness and ability to undergo training and achieve competency in squint assessment and management.
