Job Summary
Mengo Hospital is seeking qualified and dedicated Ophthalmic Clinical Officers to provide comprehensive, high-quality primary and secondary eye care services. The successful candidates will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with ocular diseases while supporting referrals, clinical improvement initiatives, patient education, outreach programs, and departmental growth objectives.
The role requires a skilled eye care professional who can deliver excellent patient care, maintain professional standards, support other clinical staff, and contribute to the overall success of the Eye Department.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Eye Care Services
  • Conduct comprehensive ophthalmic patient history taking and eye examinations.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage common ocular diseases and conditions within the scope of practice.
  • Prescribe appropriate medications and develop suitable treatment plans.
  • Perform basic orthoptic and squint (strabismus) assessments, including ocular alignment and binocular vision assessments.
  • Conduct post-operative reviews and provide follow-up care for patients.
  • Ensure timely referral of patients requiring specialized ophthalmological services.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient medical records.
  • Provide patient counseling on eye health, treatment plans, and preventive care.
Departmental Support and Leadership
  • Supervise and provide guidance to other clinicians and eye care team members.
  • Maintain professional clinical standards within the Eye Department.
  • Support continuous improvement of clinical services and patient care quality.
  • Assist in identifying suitable patients for surgical services.
  • Support expansion and growth of community eye outreach programs.
  • Participate in departmental activities aimed at improving service delivery.
Training and Quality Improvement
  • Provide in-service training and mentorship to interns, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
  • Promote infection prevention and control practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical guidelines, and professional standards.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Clinical Ophthalmology from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Additional training in ophthalmic care, orthoptics, or related eye health services is an added advantage.
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar ophthalmic clinical role.
  • Candidates without prior experience must demonstrate willingness and ability to undergo training and achieve competency in squint assessment and management.
