Research Midwife – IDRC

About IDRC
IDRC is involved in supporting research initiatives that generate evidence to improve health outcomes and strengthen healthcare systems. Through clinical and implementation research, IDRC works with healthcare professionals, research teams, and communities to address important public health challenges.
The organization is seeking a qualified and experienced Research Midwife to support maternal health research activities, participant follow-up, clinical data collection, and study implementation.

Job Summary

The Research Midwife will support the implementation of clinical research studies involving pregnant women, mothers, and newborns. The role involves participant recruitment, counselling, maternal health assessments, data collection, pregnancy monitoring, biological sample collection, and collaboration with healthcare teams.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality research support while ensuring compliance with study protocols, ethical standards, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Participant Recruitment and Follow-Up
  • Screen potential study participants according to study eligibility criteria.
  • Obtain informed consent from participants before enrolment.
  • Enrol eligible participants into research studies.
  • Conduct regular participant follow-up throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.
  • Provide support and guidance to participants throughout the study period.
Clinical Research Data Collection
  • Conduct study interviews with enrolled participants.
  • Complete study source documents, case report forms, and research documentation accurately.
  • Collect, verify, and document:
    • Maternal health information.
    • Pregnancy outcomes.
    • Birth outcomes.
    • Neonatal health information.
  • Review medical records to obtain relevant clinical information.
  • Participate in study data entry and maintain accurate study records.
Maternal Health Assessment and Ultrasound Support
  • Perform basic obstetric ultrasound examinations as required by the study protocol.
  • Support determination of:
    • Gestational age.
    • Pregnancy status.
    • Maternal and pregnancy assessments.
  • Ensure ultrasound procedures are conducted according to approved research guidelines.
Participant Counselling and Health Education
  • Provide counselling and education to study participants on:
    • Study procedures.
    • Maternal health.
    • Pregnancy care.
    • Follow-up requirements.
  • Address participant concerns and provide appropriate support.
  • Promote understanding and adherence to study activities.
Clinical Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with healthcare teams including:
    • Antenatal care teams.
    • Maternity units.
    • Labour wards.
    • Neonatal care teams.
    • Postnatal care teams.
  • Support accurate identification and documentation of maternal and newborn outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with study investigators and research staff.
Biological Sample Collection and Study Procedures
  • Collect biological specimens according to study requirements.
  • Ensure proper processing, documentation, storage, and transportation of samples.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of TB preventive therapy according to study procedures.
  • Participate in research meetings and study activities.

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must have:
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council is mandatory.

Required Certifications

Applicants must have:
  • Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Certificate in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) or Human Subjects Protection (HSP).
  • Certificate in Sonography from a reputable institution.
