LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST
C-Care Uganda

JOB SUMMARY
C-Care Uganda is seeking qualified and detail-oriented Laboratory Technologists to support diagnostic laboratory services. One Laboratory Technologist will manage the Annex Laboratory, focusing on electrophoresis, allergy testing, and molecular biology, while the second will support the Microbiology Laboratory to meet the growing workload. The successful candidates will ensure accurate laboratory testing, quality assurance, and timely reporting of results to support quality patient care.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Technologist will perform routine and specialized laboratory investigations, process patient specimens, maintain laboratory equipment, uphold quality management systems, ensure biosafety compliance, and provide excellent laboratory services that support patient diagnosis and treatment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Testing
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests according to established procedures and quality standards
  • Analyze patient samples accurately and report results within agreed turnaround times
  • Operate laboratory analyzers and diagnostic equipment efficiently
  • Verify laboratory results and promptly escalate abnormal or critical findings

Sample Collection and Handling
  • Collect blood and other patient specimens using appropriate techniques
  • Ensure proper labeling, handling, transportation, and storage of laboratory specimens
  • Reject unsuitable specimens according to laboratory protocols and communicate with the requesting departments

Quality Assurance
  • Participate in Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Assessment (EQA) programmes
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality management systems and accreditation standards
  • Participate in audits and implement corrective actions where required

Equipment Management
  • Operate, calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Report equipment faults promptly and coordinate servicing and maintenance

Inventory Management
  • Monitor laboratory reagent and consumable stock levels
  • Request replenishment before stock depletion
  • Ensure proper storage of reagents and monitor expiry dates

Infection Prevention and Safety
  • Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies
  • Maintain biosafety and proper laboratory waste disposal standards
  • Correctly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Report laboratory incidents, spills, and occupational exposures promptly

Patient Care and Customer Service
  • Provide courteous and professional service to patients and clinical teams
  • Explain specimen collection procedures where necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from a recognized institution
  • Registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a busy hospital laboratory is preferred
  • Experience in microbiology, molecular biology, electrophoresis, or allergy testing is an added advantage
