About IDRC
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is seeking a qualified and motivated Laboratory Research Assistant to support entomological monitoring, laboratory diagnostics, and malaria vector research activities. The successful candidate will contribute to laboratory-based research, sample processing, molecular analysis, quality assurance, and operational research aimed at strengthening malaria vector control programs.

Job Summary
The Laboratory Research Assistant will provide technical support for entomological surveillance and laboratory investigations by conducting mosquito identification, molecular and immunological assays, maintaining laboratory quality standards, managing laboratory equipment, and supporting research data collection and reporting. The role requires practical laboratory experience, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of malaria vector surveillance techniques.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
  • Support entomological monitoring and laboratory sample processing activities.
  • Conduct morphological identification of Anopheles mosquito species.
  • Perform Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays for sibling species identification of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus species complexes.
  • Detect insecticide resistance markers, including Kdr and Ace-1R mutations.
  • Conduct Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) for malaria sporozoite detection and blood meal analysis.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and maintain appropriate sample storage and cold chain systems.
  • Implement laboratory quality assurance procedures and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, and inventory records.
  • Ensure accurate laboratory data recording, data entry, and timely reporting.
  • Support laboratory training and capacity-building activities.
  • Participate in malaria vector control operational research projects.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, or Biomedical Sciences (Mandatory).
  • Diploma in Medical Entomology and Parasitology will be an added advantage.

Required Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
  • Knowledge and practical experience in PCR, ELISA, and malaria vector identification techniques.
  • Knowledge of insecticide resistance monitoring methods.
  • Certificate in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Biosafety.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and report writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary research teams.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to quality laboratory practices.
