Job Summary

The Enrolled Midwife will provide professional midwifery services to mothers during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and postpartum periods while following national healthcare protocols, infection prevention standards, and newborn care guidelines.
The role involves providing antenatal care, safe delivery services, postnatal care, family planning support, immunization services, health education, patient monitoring, and community healthcare activities.
The successful candidate will support mothers and newborns by identifying complications early, providing appropriate care, maintaining accurate records, and referring high-risk cases when required.

Key Responsibilities

Maternal and Newborn Healthcare
  • Provide high-quality maternal, newborn, and child health services to mothers before, during, and after pregnancy.
  • Support safe deliveries while preventing complications affecting mothers and babies.
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and ensure timely referral of complicated cases.
  • Provide antenatal care and monitor mothers throughout pregnancy.
  • Provide postpartum care with emphasis on infection prevention.
  • Educate mothers on breastfeeding benefits, newborn care, hygiene, and proper nutrition.
Labour and Delivery Care
  • Monitor mothers during labour and provide professional midwifery support.
  • Promote safe delivery practices according to Ministry of Health guidelines.
  • Monitor newborn health after delivery.
  • Assist healthcare teams in managing maternal and newborn complications.
  • Participate in clinical ward rounds with doctors and clinical officers.
Patient Management and Documentation
  • Receive patients and complete admission, delivery, discharge, and death records.
  • Maintain accurate patient files and healthcare documentation.
  • Prepare daily ward reports and provide proper shift handovers.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information.
  • Submit reports according to organizational schedules.
Immunization and Primary Healthcare Support
  • Provide comprehensive immunization services according to Uganda Ministry of Health guidelines.
  • Ensure proper vaccine storage, handling, and administration.
  • Monitor and report adverse events following immunization (AEFIs).
  • Support primary healthcare services including:
    • Nutrition services
    • HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT)
    • Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT)
    • Community health outreach programs
Infection Prevention and Safety
  • Maintain hygiene and sterilization standards in healthcare areas.
  • Follow Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) procedures.
  • Apply universal precautions when providing patient care.
  • Ensure proper disposal of medical and non-medical waste.
  • Monitor medical equipment and report faults.
Health Education and Community Engagement
  • Provide counselling and health education to mothers and families.
  • Promote reproductive health awareness and family planning services.
  • Support community health activities.
  • Assist with sexual violence case management and referrals.
Teamwork and Staff Support
  • Participate as an active member of the healthcare team.
  • Support training and staff performance improvement activities.
  • Work collaboratively with clinicians, nurses, volunteers, and community health workers.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications

Education, Licenses and Certifications
Applicants must have:
  • Certificate in Enrolled Midwifery from an accredited School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC).
  • Valid practicing license.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in midwifery practice.
  • Experience working in a health facility environment.
  • Experience providing maternal and newborn healthcare services.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience working with International NGOs (INGOs).
  • Experience supporting humanitarian health programs.
  • Experience working in rural and community health settings.
