Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Health Assistant supports the mission of Medical Teams International by coordinating and delivering community health education and mobilization activities aimed at promoting healthy living, disease prevention, and health awareness.
The role supports implementation of EPI outreaches, nutrition programmes, reproductive health services, disease surveillance, and outbreak response activities at community level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise, coordinate, and work closely with Village Health Teams (VHTs) in implementing community health interventions.
  • Organize and facilitate community engagement activities such as listening sessions, dialogue meetings, and focus group discussions in collaboration with health facilities and the Public Health Officer to strengthen community participation in programme planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Work together with the Public Health Officer to develop and implement health promotion and disease prevention initiatives in areas such as EPI, HIV/AIDS, WASH, child welfare, nutrition, family planning, and outbreak prevention.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with community stakeholders and coordinate local-level activities that support community health programmes.
  • Lead the selection, training, mentorship, and routine supervision of Village Health Teams to ensure effective delivery of community health services.
  • Prepare health education materials and conduct health awareness sessions within communities.
  • Strengthen the linkage between health facilities and communities through regular feedback mechanisms and support improved access to healthcare services.
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders and partners to improve utilization and understanding of available health services.
  • Conduct disease surveillance activities aimed at identifying and preventing disease outbreaks within the community.
  • Identify individuals with medical conditions and coordinate referrals to the appropriate medical teams for support and treatment.
  • Conduct home visits following referrals from health workers and volunteers.
  • Analyze programme data and submit reports according to reporting schedules and requirements.
  • Ensure all health-related activities are carried out with professionalism, integrity, and in accordance with the Medical Teams International Code of Conduct.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote safeguarding of programme participants and employees by supporting awareness creation and adherence to Medical Teams International policies on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection, and Harassment-Free Workplace standards.
  • Remain alert and responsive to safeguarding risks while promoting safe and ethical practices within programme implementation.
  • Utilize volunteers effectively whenever appropriate.
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications
  • Diploma in Environmental Health Science or Environmental Science.
  • Registration with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
  • Valid practicing licence.
  • Valid driving licence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate in Environmental Health Science registered and licensed by the relevant Professional Council.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Required Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience implementing public health and environmental health interventions.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience working with INGOs or within humanitarian settings is an added advantage.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of public health interventions including EPI, HIV/AIDS, WASH, nutrition, family planning, and outbreak prevention and response.
  • Understanding of behaviour change communication and community mobilization methods.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Strong relationship-building skills to strengthen social support systems and mobilize communities to take ownership of healthcare needs.
  • Ability to effectively present information and conduct community sensitization sessions.
  • Good analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to maintain a high-performing work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relational skills.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
