Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The position is responsible for delivering a comprehensive nursing care package covering preventive, curative, and public health education services. The role ensures quality patient care in accordance with prescriptions from Medical Officers and Clinical Officers, established medical protocols, and universal hygiene standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide nursing care services including patient observation, assessment, diagnosis support, and treatment in consultation with the Clinical Officer.
  • Maintain close interaction with patients by responding to complaints, implementing corrective measures where necessary, and escalating issues requiring additional intervention. Participate in health education for patients and their families when required.
  • Ensure patients are properly received, settled, and supported, especially those requiring assistance with feeding, personal hygiene, mobility, and comfort.
  • For ER and OPD settings, conduct triage of patients in waiting areas, wards, or emergency situations by identifying priority and emergency cases, administering first aid, and referring patients to the doctor where necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, secure, and comfortable patient environment that promotes recovery and wellbeing.
  • Participate in ward rounds and support completion of documentation related to patient admission and discharge processes.
  • Dispense medications according to prescriptions while ensuring proper labeling, dosage instructions, and patient understanding of medicine usage.
  • Participate in Primary Health Care (PHC) activities including health education, Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services, and nutrition programmes.
  • Provide family planning, PMTCT, and HCT services both within the health facility and during community outreach activities.
  • Monitor the use and availability of medicines and nursing supplies and notify supervisors regarding replenishment requirements.
  • Ensure biomedical equipment remains functional through proper usage, routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and timely reporting of faults to supervisors.
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention, hygiene, sterilization procedures, and universal precaution standards.
  • Maintain accurate data collection and submit reports according to established schedules.
  • Ensure all medical activities are carried out with professionalism, integrity, and in compliance with ethical standards and the MTI Code of Conduct.
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certificate in Comprehensive Nursing from a recognized School of Nursing and Midwifery is required.
  • Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council is mandatory.
  • A valid practicing license is required.
  • At least six (6) months of nursing experience is required.
  • Previous experience working with international NGOs is considered an added advantage.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Good understanding of professional nursing procedures, principles, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical and non-medical waste management procedures.
  • Understanding of hygiene management practices and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Strong practical skills in delivering professional nursing care and patient treatment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Good command of both spoken and written English.
