At Light for the World, we believe in a world where people with eye conditions and disabilities can fully exercise their rights to health, education, work, and protection in emergencies.
We are a global development organisation working to empower people with disabilities and improve eye health in low-income countries. For over 30 years, we have strengthened health systems, promoted inclusive education, and advanced economic empowerment, focusing on the poorest and most marginalised.

ABOUT THE ROLE – WE CAN WORK PROGRAMME

In line with its economic empowerment strategy, Light for the World with funding from Mastercard Foundation will implement an 8-year project dubbed We Can Work, a regional signature disability programme that uses a system and mindset change approach to impact the lives of at least 1,000,000 young women and men with disabilities and enables them to access dignified and fulfilling work.
The programme works with umbrella Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and Entrepreneurship Hubs in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria.
With partners, the programme will effect change at:
  • Individuals (households and communities)
  • Organisations
  • Institutions
Young persons with disabilities will act as change agents and provide disability inclusion advisory services and advocate for disability-inclusive policies.
Key Ingredients of the Programme
  • Engaging caregivers and communities through empowering disability inclusion messaging
  • Driving co-creation processes for inclusive economic development
  • Developing agency through the We Can Work Academy
  • Amplifying voices of young persons with disabilities

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Program / Project Management
  • Ensure project planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation
  • Responsible for programme narrative and financial reporting
  • Ensure safeguarding policy implementation
  • Ensure quality implementation as per standards
  • Ensure donor compliance and requirements are met
  • Participate in co-creation and innovation initiatives
Project Design and Development
  • Ensure partner proposals align with strategy and Theory of Change
  • Guide partners in proposal and workplan development
  • Represent and translate partner needs into organisational planning
Grant Contract, Financial Management & Reporting
  • Manage overall budget planning with grant team
  • Ensure timely submission of partner reports (narrative & financial)
  • Ensure donor reporting is accurate and timely
  • Upload project documents onto Sextant with Grant Officer
  • Monitor budgets and ensure proper forecasting
  • Support partners in financial compliance and reporting
Monitoring, Evaluation and Follow-up
  • Conduct monitoring visits and supportive supervision
  • Contribute to baseline, mid-line and end-line assessments
  • Support MERLA team documentation
  • Ensure quality and timely reporting
  • Document best practices and learning
  • Support monitoring tools development
Capacity Building and Technical Support
  • Collaborate with technical experts for implementation quality
  • Identify partner capacity gaps
  • Support implementation of capacity assessments
  • Guide activity planning and financial utilization
  • Provide technical support across thematic areas
  • Support monitoring and follow-up of activities
People Management
  • Line manage staff (recruitment, appraisal, coaching, mentoring)
  • Support staff development and training
  • Ensure HR policy compliance
Partnership, Advocacy and Networking
  • Act as main point of contact for Mastercard Foundation
  • Build relationships with implementing partners
  • Participate in national and international forums
  • Promote disability inclusion awareness
  • Strengthen partnerships with government, CSOs, academia, and private sector
  • Ensure collaboration between partners
  • Foster advocacy and networking at all levels
Representation
  • Represent Country Director / Head of Programmes when delegated
  • Represent organisation in meetings, forums, and technical working groups

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Development Studies, International Development, Sociology, Social Sciences, Programme Management or related field
Experience
  • Minimum 7 years’ project and grant management experience in INGOs/NGOs
  • Experience in donor-funded programmes
  • Experience working with organisations of persons with disabilities
  • Experience in government liaison and partnership management
  • Experience in capacity building and facilitation
Skills
  • Strong leadership and team management
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Strategic and innovative thinking
  • Tech proficiency (MS Office)
  • High integrity and accountability
  • Ability to work in diverse teams
