EHS OFFICER – MANUFACTURING PLANT

JOB SUMMARY
Spiro Uganda is seeking a highly skilled Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Officer to support manufacturing plant operations in Kampala. The role is responsible for implementing workplace safety systems, ensuring environmental compliance, managing occupational health and safety programs, and promoting a strong safety culture within an industrial and automotive manufacturing environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The EHS Officer will implement and enforce environmental, health, and safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices across all manufacturing and operational areas. The role involves conducting workplace inspections, hazard identification, risk assessments (HIRA), and developing corrective action plans to minimize workplace risks.
The position includes leading toolbox talks, safety inductions, awareness campaigns, and continuous safety training programs for employees and contractors. The officer will investigate workplace incidents and near misses, conduct root cause analysis (RCA), and ensure corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are effectively implemented.
The role supports emergency preparedness programs including fire safety systems, evacuation drills, and first aid readiness. The EHS Officer will monitor environmental compliance in line with National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) regulations, oversee waste management systems, and support Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) implementation.
The position ensures safe handling, storage, and disposal of batteries, chemicals, oils, and industrial materials. The officer will maintain statutory EHS documentation, ensure regulatory reporting compliance, and support audits and inspections.
Additional responsibilities include overseeing machine safety systems, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, contractor safety management, and Permit to Work systems to ensure compliance with occupational safety standards in a manufacturing and automotive assembly environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, or a related field. Additional certifications in First Aid, Fire Safety, Risk Assessment, or Environmental Management Systems are an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE
The role requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in EHS management within manufacturing, automotive assembly, industrial operations, or heavy engineering environments. The candidate must have hands-on experience with Uganda OSH Act compliance, environmental regulations, risk assessment systems, incident investigation processes, and safety training programs.
Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, environmental compliance systems, and industrial risk management is essential.
