Job Description: Substation Operator

• Monitor switchboard instruments and equipment to detect disturbances and operational abnormalities.
• Ensure proper functioning of transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and auxiliary systems.
• Carry out switching operations according to instructions received from the National Control Center.
• Receive, interpret, and implement switching instructions accurately and safely.

• Perform routine inspections of electrical equipment and substation facilities.
• Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on transformers, circuit breakers, and associated equipment.
• Monitor transformer and switchgear performance and document any faults, defects, or anomalies.
• Ensure equipment operates within approved safety and technical standards.

• Respond promptly to power outages, equipment failures, and emergency situations.
• Operate switching devices to interrupt current flow and restore power through alternative circuits where necessary.
• Support restoration activities to minimize downtime and maintain system reliability.

• Undertake monthly energy meter readings and record accurate operational data.
• Prepare maintenance reports, operational logs, and equipment performance records.
• Report faults, incidents, and operational challenges to supervisors.

• Ensure compliance with electrical safety procedures and operational regulations.
• Maintain cleanliness and proper housekeeping standards within substations.
• Promote workplace safety and adherence to company policies.

• Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in power system operation and maintenance.

• Knowledge of electrical substations, transformers, switchgear, and transmission systems.
• Ability to interpret switching instructions and operational procedures.
• Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and during emergencies.
• Good communication and reporting skills.
