TIMBER PLANTATION PROGRAM MANAGER

Position Summary

The Timber Plantation Program Manager will provide strategic, technical, and operational leadership for the establishment, management, monitoring, and harvesting of timber plantations across designated forest zones in Uganda.
The role oversees two key plantation programs: Native Species Restoration Plantations, managed in collaboration with the Carbon Manager to generate and maintain verified carbon credits, and Commercial Timber Plantations, managed alongside the Commercial Team to deliver sustainable and revenue-generating timber harvests.
The successful candidate will ensure plantation programs meet international silvicultural standards, carbon certification requirements, environmental sustainability goals, and commercial objectives while maintaining compliance with forestry regulations and project timelines.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Plantation Planning & Establishment
  • Lead assessment, land preparation, and plantation design activities within designated forestry zones.
  • Develop plantation establishment plans and implementation schedules.
  • Coordinate site preparation and planting activities for both native and commercial timber species.
  • Ensure all plantation activities align with approved project objectives and budgets.
  • Optimize plantation establishment processes to maximize survival rates and growth performance.
Nursery Management & Seedling Procurement
  • Oversee nursery sourcing and procurement of high-quality seedlings.
  • Ensure availability of suitable native and commercial tree species.
  • Monitor seedling quality standards and supplier performance.
  • Coordinate timely delivery of planting materials to field sites.
  • Support development of sustainable nursery management systems.
Carbon Forestry & Ecosystem Restoration
  • Implement plantation programs aligned with approved carbon certification methodologies.
  • Collaborate closely with the Carbon Manager to support carbon credit generation and verification.
  • Ensure accurate collection and reporting of plantation data for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems.
  • Monitor biomass growth, survival rates, and carbon sequestration performance.
  • Apply silvicultural practices that maximize biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
  • Support ecosystem restoration and sustainable land-use initiatives.
Commercial Timber Plantation Management
  • Collaborate with the Commercial Team to identify and select commercially viable timber species.
  • Support cultivation of species suitable for Uganda’s climatic and market conditions, including:
    • Teak
    • Mahogany
    • Pine
    • Eucalyptus
    • Mvule
  • Develop and implement rotation management strategies.
  • Coordinate thinning, pruning, and stand improvement programs.
  • Monitor plantation growth performance and timber quality.
  • Support commercial forestry planning and sustainable harvesting operations.
Harvest Planning & Forestry Operations
  • Provide technical input into harvest planning and timber production schedules.
  • Develop harvest volume projections and forecasting models.
  • Support planning of timber supply contracts and commercial commitments.
  • Ensure harvesting activities comply with national forestry regulations and sustainability standards.
  • Promote responsible forestry practices throughout plantation operations.
Field Team Leadership & Capacity Building
  • Manage plantation technicians, field supervisors, nursery workers, and operational staff.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field teams.
  • Coordinate workforce planning and performance management activities.
  • Promote adherence to safety procedures and operational standards.
  • Build technical capacity across plantation management teams.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Technical Oversight
  • Conduct regular field assessments and plantation performance reviews.
  • Monitor survival rates, growth performance, ecological outcomes, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain plantation monitoring systems.
  • Identify operational risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives based on field performance data.
Environmental Sustainability & Risk Management
  • Advise on soil conservation and sustainable land management practices.
  • Develop water management strategies for plantation operations.
  • Monitor and manage pest and disease outbreaks.
  • Implement climate adaptation and resilience measures.
  • Promote environmentally responsible forestry management practices.
Stakeholder Engagement & Community Integration
  • Collaborate with Community Liaison teams to engage local communities.
  • Support community participation in planting, maintenance, and conservation activities.
  • Foster positive relationships with government agencies, investors, donors, and local stakeholders.
  • Promote sustainable livelihoods through community forestry initiatives.
Reporting & Documentation
  • Prepare technical progress reports for management, investors, donors, and government stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate plantation records and operational documentation.
  • Provide periodic updates on plantation performance, carbon outcomes, and commercial targets.
  • Support compliance reporting and project audits.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Certifications
  • Master's Degree or PhD in:
    • Forestry
    • Silviculture
    • Wood Science
    • Environmental Science
    • Natural Resource Management
    • Related Field
Experience
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in plantation forestry or timber management.
  • At least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing native species restoration projects and commercial timber plantations.
  • Experience with carbon forestry projects and MRV systems.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and contractor relationships.
  • Strong understanding of East African forestry systems and silvicultural practices.
