For over 30 years, Trees for the Future (TREES) has been a global leader in agroforestry training, empowering farming families to restore landscapes, improve livelihoods, and build sustainable food systems. Through the Forest Garden Approach, TREES supports farmers in planting trees, restoring degraded land, increasing food production, and creating resilient communities.
Currently operating in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, TREES has planted more than 400 million trees globally and continues to drive climate resilience, environmental restoration, and economic development through nature-based solutions.
In Uganda, TREES works with over 7,000 farmers across the Lake Victoria Watershed in the Eastern Region, supporting land restoration and carbon financing initiatives through strategic partnerships.

Position Summary

The Program Manager provides strategic, technical, and operational leadership for the implementation of TREES’ regional programs. The role is responsible for overall program performance, staff supervision, budget management, stakeholder engagement, compliance oversight, reporting, and resource coordination.
Working closely with the Director of Field Programs, the Program Manager ensures that all project activities are implemented efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with organizational goals, donor requirements, and sustainable development objectives.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Implementation
  • Lead planning, coordination, and implementation of regional programs to achieve agreed targets, timelines, and budgets.
  • Ensure consistent and high-quality implementation of the Forest Garden Approach across project sites.
  • Support project identification, feasibility assessments, planning, and expansion into new locations.
  • Coordinate implementation strategies to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Monitor project progress and address implementation challenges proactively.
Staff Supervision & Capacity Building
  • Supervise, mentor, and support Program Officers and field teams.
  • Strengthen staff performance, accountability, and operational coordination.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and performance management processes in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Foster an inclusive, ethical, and respectful work environment.
  • Coordinate staff training, certification, and professional development programs.
  • Support capacity-building initiatives to improve program delivery and impact.
Budget Management & Financial Oversight
  • Coordinate preparation and management of regional program budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures and budget performance in collaboration with Finance teams.
  • Identify budget variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of program resources.
  • Support financial planning and resource allocation activities.
Procurement & Resource Management
  • Identify procurement needs and coordinate timely acquisition of goods and services.
  • Ensure procurement activities comply with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Oversee planning, distribution, and management of seeds, materials, equipment, and inventory.
  • Coordinate logistics and resource allocation to support program implementation.
Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning & Reporting
  • Ensure accurate data collection, verification, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) teams to track project performance.
  • Review and submit consolidated program reports to the Director of Field Programs.
  • Utilize MEL findings to support adaptive management and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor program indicators and evaluate progress toward project objectives.
Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with:
    • Government agencies
    • Development partners
    • Community leaders
    • Farmer groups
    • Donors
    • Strategic stakeholders
  • Represent TREES in meetings, workshops, and external engagements.
  • Support partnership development and collaborative initiatives.
  • Promote positive stakeholder relations and organizational visibility.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements, local regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Monitor adherence to program standards, procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Identify operational risks and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Support governance, accountability, and transparency initiatives.
Operational Coordination
  • Coordinate meetings, workshops, field visits, travel arrangements, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Ensure efficient communication and collaboration across teams.
  • Support organizational planning and operational effectiveness.
  • Facilitate smooth implementation of project activities and field operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • General Agriculture
    • Horticulture
    • Agroforestry
    • Environmental Science
    • Agribusiness Management
    • Agricultural Economics
    • Natural Resource Management
    • Forestry
    • Or any related field
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience implementing sustainable land management practices within rural farming communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Program Management
    • Team Leadership
    • Budget Management
    • Rural Development Projects
  • Valid motorcycle riding license with experience riding both on-road and off-road.
  • Willingness to be stationed at the designated project base for the duration of the project.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to use smartphone applications and digital tools.
  • Must complete and pass the Forest Gardening Training Examination within two months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Nature-Based Solutions and Carbon Credits is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to environmental sustainability, agroforestry, and community development.

Terms of Employment

Employment will be offered on a one-year renewable contract, subject to funding availability and continued existence of the position. A probation period of three months will apply.
