JOB VACANCY: MEDICAL UNDERWRITER

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Medical Underwriter will support the assessment and underwriting of medical insurance risks, ensuring compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite. The role focuses on accurate pricing, risk evaluation, and policy issuance to maintain portfolio profitability and service excellence.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
To assess, evaluate, and underwrite medical insurance risks, determine appropriate coverage terms, and ensure accurate risk selection and pricing that protects company profitability and competitiveness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Risk Assessment & Underwriting
  • Review medical insurance applications and supporting documents
  • Evaluate medical histories and risk profiles
  • Determine eligibility, pricing, and coverage terms
  • Recommend premiums, exclusions, or policy loadings
  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with risk appetite and reinsurance requirements
  • Prepare quotations for new and renewal business
  • Decline high-risk applications where necessary
2. POLICY DOCUMENTATION & PROCESSING
  • Prepare quotations, policies, endorsements, and renewals
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance of underwriting documents
  • Maintain updated underwriting records
  • Manage policy renewals and renewal quotations (1 month before expiry)
  • Follow up on payments and manage debt aging
  • Coordinate issuance of medical cards within required timelines
3. COMPLIANCE & GOVERNANCE
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and insurance laws
  • Adhere to risk acceptance limits and approval procedures
  • Escalate exceptions where necessary
4. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
  • Work with brokers, agents, claims teams, and clients
  • Provide technical underwriting guidance
  • Handle client queries and complaints professionally
  • Support training for staff and intermediaries
5. MEDICAL & TECHNICAL LIAISON
  • Interpret medical reports and laboratory results
  • Engage medical professionals for clarification
  • Coordinate with reinsurers for complex cases
6. MONITORING & REPORTING
  • Monitor portfolio performance and risk trends
  • Prepare underwriting reports and recommendations
  • Support audits and compliance reviews
  • Contribute to product development insights
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Actuarial Science, or related field
  • Professional qualification (ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance) is an added advantage
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in underwriting

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Business Development Officer – Group Risk will drive growth of the Group Risk insurance portfolio by acquiring new business, managing client relationships, and expanding distribution channels while ensuring compliance with underwriting and regulatory standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & REVENUE GROWTH
  • Acquire new Group Risk business from corporates, SMEs, SACCOs, MFIs, and associations
  • Develop and execute sales strategies to achieve premium and revenue targets
  • Build and manage a strong sales pipeline from lead generation to closure
  • Prepare and deliver client-focused proposals and presentations
  • Negotiate commercial terms within approved authority limits
2. CLIENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with corporate clients and decision-makers
  • Manage renewals and improve client retention
  • Conduct client review meetings to assess scheme performance and claims experience
  • Oversee onboarding of new schemes
  • Handle client concerns and escalations
3. INTERMEDIARY & DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT
  • Work with brokers, agents, and bancassurance partners
  • Provide technical and sales support to intermediaries
  • Evaluate intermediary performance and ensure compliance
  • Drive joint marketing and business development initiatives
4. UNDERWRITING & PROPOSAL COORDINATION
  • Collaborate with underwriting and actuarial teams
  • Analyze client data for accurate pricing and quotations
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting and pricing guidelines
  • Communicate underwriting decisions to clients and intermediaries
5. PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT & RETENTION
  • Monitor portfolio performance (growth, retention, loss ratios)
  • Support scheme reviews and restructuring
  • Identify risks and recommend corrective actions
  • Improve overall scheme performance with internal teams
6. MARKET INTELLIGENCE & PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activity
  • Provide insights for product improvement
  • Support product launches and marketing campaigns
  • Contribute to innovation in insurance solutions
7. COMPLIANCE & REPORTING
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal policies
  • Maintain CRM records and sales pipelines
  • Prepare sales and performance reports
  • Support audits and governance processes
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Marketing, or related field
  • Professional qualification (ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance) is an advantage
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role
