JOB DESCRIPTION – RESIDENT ANESTHESIOLOGIST

JOB SUMMARY
The Resident Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing specialist anesthesia, perioperative medicine, critical care, resuscitation, and emergency airway management services while ensuring the safe, efficient, and evidence-based delivery of care across the Operating Theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Emergency Department.
The role provides clinical leadership in perioperative patient optimization, advanced life support, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic management, pain medicine, trauma resuscitation, and multidisciplinary critical care management. The Resident Anesthesiologist plays a central role in promoting patient safety, reducing perioperative morbidity and mortality, improving theatre efficiency, and strengthening clinical governance through quality improvement, audit, teaching, and evidence-based practice.
1. DELIVER SAFE ANAESTHESIA CARE
  • Provide high-quality anaesthetic care throughout the perioperative continuum.
  • Ensure patient safety before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Conduct pre-operative patient assessments and risk evaluations.
  • Monitor patients during anesthesia and manage post-operative recovery.
2. LEAD CRITICAL CARE SERVICES
  • Provide specialist management for critically ill patients requiring advanced organ support.
  • Manage patients in the ICU and HDU.
  • Oversee mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary critical care planning and management.
3. SUPPORT EMERGENCY MEDICINE
  • Provide immediate specialist intervention for emergency airway management.
  • Lead trauma resuscitation and cardiac arrest response efforts.
  • Manage critically ill and unstable patients in emergency settings.
  • Support advanced life support and emergency stabilization procedures.
4. IMPROVE THEATRE PERFORMANCE
  • Collaborate with theatre teams to improve operating theatre efficiency.
  • Reduce surgical delays and cancellations.
  • Enhance patient flow and theatre utilization.
  • Support perioperative process improvement initiatives.
5. STRENGTHEN CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
  • Lead clinical audits and mortality reviews.
  • Participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Conduct Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) reviews.
  • Develop and implement clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Promote patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
6. BUILD CLINICAL CAPACITY
  • Mentor and supervise doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Deliver teaching sessions, simulation training, and continuing medical education.
  • Support professional development and competency building across clinical teams.
7. SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH
  • Contribute to the development of sustainable perioperative, emergency, and critical care services.
  • Support initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes and organizational performance.
  • Participate in strategic service development and healthcare innovation.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent from a recognized university.
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Anesthesiology or equivalent specialist qualification recognized by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
  • Successful completion of an accredited specialist residency program.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-specialization experience preferred.
  • Current ACLS certification preferred.
  • ATLS and/or PALS certification desirable.
  • Fellowship in Critical Care is an added advantage.
  • Experience in ICU, HDU, trauma, and obstetric anesthesia preferred.
